Na Lima Hana Participant Obtains Employment

Photo of Frederick ECS

Having recently arrived from the Mainland, Frederick was excited to start a new life in Hawaii. But unfortunate and unexpected circumstances left him alone with no income. When a neighbor learned that Frederick was unemployed and in desperate need of a job, the neighbor referred Frederick to HCAP’s Leeward District Service Center. Leeward District Service Center staff wasted no time in enrolling Frederick in the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program. Less than a week after Frederick completed Job Readiness Training, he found full-time employment at Dole Plantation as a Train Associate. Through the ECS program, Frederick received work shoes and clothing to help give him a fresh start with his new job.

SCSEP Participant Obtains Unsubsidized Employment

Photo of Bienvenido

A few years ago, Bienvenido came into the HCAP Corporate Office, looking for work. At the time, he and his wife had recently moved to the US from the Philippines and lived with their daughter in Ewa Beach. HCAP staff referred Bienvenido to the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), where he enrolled and was placed at the Hale Pono Ewa Beach Boys and Girls Club as a janitor.

In April 2018, when Bienvenido had his annual re-certification for program eligibility, it was determined that since the minimum wage increased, his wife’s income from her employer had disqualified him from continuing with SCSEP due to income limits. Fortunately at around the same time, Bienvenido received an employment offer as part-time janitor at Campbell High School.

Bienvenido will begin his job at Campbell High School shortly after a planned trip to the Philippines. This was wonderful timing for Bienvenido, and we wish Bienvenido the best in his future endeavors.

Last Friday, the students at the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After School Program’s Kalihi STEM Exploration Center, a 21st Century Community Learning Center, participated in a Town Hall at Princess Victoria Ka’iulani Elementary School. As the Kalihi STEM Exploration Center is located on the campus, we are working together to provide the children with an education that will propel them to a better future. At the latest Town Hall event, 250 desktop computers were given to the students that attended the event. Now the students of Princess Victoria Ka’iulani Elementary School can continue learning with technology outside of the classroom.

Aiea Head Start Children Take Part in Kindness Rocks Project

Photo of Head Start Kindness Rocks

At a recent Aiea I,II, and Pre Plus Head Start family engagement event, families got together with their children to paint rocks for the Kindness Rocks Project. The Kindness Rocks Project, which has won the hearts and minds of people throughout the US, encourages people to create inspirational rocks and leave them for others to find. Life coach Megan Murphy created the Kindness Rocks Project with one mission in mind: to cultivate kindness and compassion in people’s everyday lives. To learn more about this wonderful project, please visit this link. Overall, the family engagement activity was a big success, as the parents and their children left the classroom with a lot of compassion in their hearts and smiles on their faces.
