HCAP Board Orientation & Tour

HCAP Board of Directors tour February, 2014
Today, HCAP board members toured several programs on the Windward side of the island. Maile Burke, from the State of Hawaii, Office of Community Services also attended. They began by visiting a Head Start classroom at Waimanalo Elementary School, followed by a tour of the Waimanalo Farm which is maintained in partnership with LEAF Hawaii. Each year, students from Kailua High School do a community service project at the farm. Board members observed the students working hard to clear a small area of the 2 acre plot of land.

Next, the board members toured the newly opened Windward STEM Exploration Center at Waiahole Elementary School. Nearby Waiahole Elementary School, they also visited HCAP’s Windward District Service Center which provides services to individuals and families from Waimanalo to Waimea. The Windward District Service Center staff gave a short presentation on the types of services they provide and clients they serve.

During lunch, HCAP staff gave entertaining presentations about additional HCAP programs and services. To conclude the day, board members headed back to town to visit the HCAP Youth Services Program, located in Kakaʻako. Everyone enjoyed the tours and learned in depth about the range of programs and services that HCAP offers to residents island-wide.

Head Start Students Learn about Community Helpers

Head Start class receives support from Home Depot KapoleiChildren at Jack Hall Head Start are currently learning about “Community Helpers.” On February 19, 2014 children at Jack Hall Head Start got to experience what it feels like to be a Carpenter. Together, children and parents worked hard on making a football ring toss. This was a hands-on activity generously provided by Home Depot Kapolei.

Leahi Clothing Drive February, 2014The Leahi District Service Center has been collecting clothes from neighboring churches and community members in order to distribute them to clients in need. The purpose for the collection is to have a variety of formal clothing that could be used during interviews for clients seeking employment. Clothing ranges from coats, dress shirts and ties for men, to dresses, heels, and sandals for women.

If you are interested in making a clothing donation, please contact the Leahi District Service Center at 732-7755.
