This past week at the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After School Program, a 21st Century Community Learning Center, students and their families were invited to the STEM Carnival, which was held at the Central STEM Exploration Center. The STEM staff came together to plan this event as part of a community outreach and family engagement event. It was a day of fun filled science experiments, cotton candy, face painting, and lunch! Students learned how to make slime, launch bottle rockets made from recycled materials, and program a FIRST LEGO League (FLL) robot. Information on health and safety, as well as all other HCAP programs, were handed out to parents in attendance. The event, which took place on Saturday, lasted from 10AM in the morning until 1:30PM in the afternoon. Everyone had a great time! The next STEM Carnival will be held at the Leeward STEM Exploration Center on March 17th.

HCAP Head Start and Early Head Start’s home-based children and families recently participated in a socialization event with the Family Hui Hawaii Program, a peer-led parenting support group, at Windward Mall. Family Hui helps families thrive by coordinating support groups and offering support, encouragement and empowerment for parents and caregivers as they face the joys and challenges of raising children. Family Hui led a discussion with parents on the use of media and social media. Parents discussed the power of digital media and how it can be a great way to document and record a child’s growth and developmental milestones.
