HCAP Head Start’s Recruitment Day is a Success

Photo of Head Start recruitment

On January 5th, HCAP Head Start staff conducted widespread recruitment for Head Start and Early Head Start’s early learning programs at local stores & markets, medical & dental clinics, community service providers, child care partners and educational institutions across Oahu. It was a collective effort for HCAP Head Start, as everyone pitched in, including staff from HCAP’s Central District Service Center, who helped out with canvassing in Pearl City. A few days before recruitment, HCAP Head Start Family Advocates prepared applications, flyers, and brochures for the canvassers.

On the day of recruitment, HCAP Head Start staff recruited door-to-door in various communities, posted flyers at businesses, and made their presence known in the communities that Head Start classrooms are located in. Overall, it was a productive and rewarding day for HCAP Head Start; it gave staff the opportunity to meet and reach out to new people who may have not heard of the Head Start program before.

STEM Robotics Students Visit Wet ‘n’ Wild Hawaii

Photo of STEM Wet 'n' Wild

This past week at the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After School Program, a 21st Century Community Learning Center, students who participated in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Robotics Competition were invited to attend a field trip to Wet ‘n’ Wild Hawaii. The theme for this year’s FLL tournament was hydrodynamics, and attending the water park allowed the students to see a real life application of the theme. Water slides are powered by pumps that push water to the top of the slide, and every water park has pump rooms full of machines to keep the water flowing and clean. Little did students know that a lot of science, engineering, and physics goes into the planning and maintenance of water parks! Students and their families had a great time spending the day in the water park, going on slides, and adventuring in the various pools.

The HCAP Head Start program held its annual calendar contest recently. Our Head Start children were invited to submit drawings of their favorite storybooks. Although every submitted artwork was a winner in our eyes, only 12 could be selected for the 2018 calendar. On behalf of the HCAP Head Start program, we would like to extend a huge mahalo to all of the classrooms, children and families that participated.

Windward District Service Center Recruits for Upcoming Tax Preparation Program

Photo of Volunteer recruitment

Last week, HCAP’s Windward District Service Center staff presented HCAP’s mission and programs to Bank of Hawaii employees, as part of a volunteer recruitment and outreach effort. Staff focused on HCAP’s Income Tax Services/Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program and the positive impact it has on the communities HCAP serves. The EITC program will begin in February, but HCAP is already gearing up to recruit and train potential volunteers. Bank of Hawaii staff is interested in volunteering at the HCAP Corporate Office tax preparation site because of its convenient downtown location.
