Na Lima Hana Participant Obtains On-the-Job Experience at HCAP

Photo of Christine ECS

Christine was first introduced to HCAP earlier this year through the Leahi District Service Center’s ongoing partnership with the Family Assessment Center. She was extremely determined to find housing for her and her daughter, so finding employment was of high priority for her. Leahi District Service Center’s community workers referred Christine to the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program. Upon enrolling in the ECS Program, she received help developing her resume and preparing for job interviews.

Her first job after receiving ECS services was a part-time shift for a retail inventory company. But by April, Christine and her daughter had moved out of the Family Assessment Center and into Vancouver Homes, a more permanent housing facility, and Christine had moved onto another part-time position as field interviewer, collecting survey responses on the phone.

But since Christine was only working part-time hours, she expressed interest in other employment opportunities. Christine was offered the opportunity to apply for the temporary position of Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Intake Aide at HCAP. She was hired and began working full-time for LIHEAP’s Energy Credit (EC) Program in the months of May and June. Christine absolutely loved working at HCAP and enjoyed interacting with the clients. As someone who was once on the receiving end of HCAP’s services and programs, it was rewarding to be able to help clients who were in similar situations.

Even though the EC Program has ended, Christine continues to provide her services to the staff at Leahi District Service Center office as a volunteer. Leahi District Service Center staff is pleased to hear that Christine’s hours as field interviewer has increased and remains very grateful for Christine’s continuous help.

HCAP Head Start & Early Head Start Kick Off New School Year with Pre-Service Training

In preparation for the upcoming school year, HCAP Head Start & Early Head Start held their annual pre-service training at Kapolei Consolidated Theaters on Monday, July 22 and Tuesday, July 23. The teachers and assistant teachers in attendance had just returned from summer break.

On Day 1 of training, Ronald Mah, a nationally recognized educator and licensed marriage and family therapist, delivered an informative and humorous session on defining culture and multicultural awareness. Ronald has worked in early childhood education and has been involved in community and high school mental health clinics.

On Day 2, Ronald returned to the pre-service training and discussed ways to identify and manage four types of tantrums. Training continued with Kathy Bentley, a parent educator, who delivered training on Child Abuse indicators and mandated reporting. HCAP Human Resources Director Jocelyn Banks reviewed HCAP policies and procedures with the Head Start staff. Day 2 concluded with a mandated health and civil rights training from the Head Start Health team alongside Eleanor Fong-Seversen from the Hawaii Child Nutrition Programs.

Leeward STEM Students Learn about Paleontology

Last week, students from Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program’s Leeward STEM Exploration Center, a 21st Century Community Learning Center, got to experience paleontology through the exploration of fossils. Students were assigned a fossil to excavate out of the rock mold. Upon excavating it, the students were asked to create a pencil sketch of the fossil and to identify the fossil that had been assigned to them.

Students learned about the profession of paleontology in relation to geology while also sparking interest in the process of fossilization. They studied the Geologic Time Scale (a system developed to assist scientists in the study of earth history) and utilized the information to investigate and classify the age or geologic time of their newfound fossils.

Earlier this month, several staff from the HCAP Head Start & Early Head Start team and HCAP’s Interim Director of Finance attended the 20th Annual Wipfli National Training Conference in Las Vegas. Wipfli has been serving nonprofit and government organizations for over 80 years.

The 6-day conference offered a variety of workshop topics that were relevant to HCAP staff, including board governance, auditing, and Head Start/Early Head Start Eligibility, Recruitment, Selection, Enrollment, and Attendance (ERSEA) guidelines and performance standards. HCAP staff was happy to have had the opportunity to attend the conference and look forward to applying the knowledge gained back to our Head Start & Early Head Start programs, as well as our fiscal department.

HCAP Staff Promote Programs and Services at Kupuna Wellness Fair

This past Saturday, HCAP was among the 50 vendors and organizations in attendance at the third annual Kupuna Wellness Fair in Kapolei. Staff used the event as an opportunity to promote HCAP’s programs and services to seniors and their family members; among the programs promoted were the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), which provides meaningful part-time subsidized “hands-on” training to low-income seniors aged 55 and older, and Head Start, which is still recruiting students for the upcoming school year.

HCAP staff also used the fair as an opportunity to network and share resources with other organizations. Potential partnerships include health providers that can provide free immunization services to senior program participants of SCSEP and the Kupuna Independent Life Series.
