Na Lima Hana Participant Obtains Employment

Kubert came to the Kalihi-Palama District Service Center, hoping to obtain assistance with a bus pass voucher. Living with his daughter, he was concerned that he had been using up too much of her resources. Determined to be more financially independent, Kubert accepted a referral to the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program. Shortly after completing the ECS Program, he obtained employment at E Noa Tours as a driver. Kubert stayed in touch with the Kalihi-Palama District Service Center. Kalihi-Palama District Service Center staff saw Kubert moving up the career ladder, and transitioning from driver trainee to actual driver. He has maintained employment for over 90 days, and has been saving money. Kubert hopes to move out of his daughter’s house in the foreseeable future.

HCAP Head Start Parent Thankful for Family Engagement and Support

HCAP Head Start prides itself for the comprehensive services it provides to all families participating in the program. As we are now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 school year, HCAP Head Start would like to share excerpts from a thank you letter recently received from a Head Start parent that describes some of the benefits of the program:

When I first signed up my child for the HCAP Headstart Program in 2015, I thought I was just signing my child up for a program that helped with school readiness. I didn’t know what I actually signed up for was help for my entire family.

Having this program open and available, has been a blessing, not to me but to families in our community. They offer a great deal of help, guidance, support and resources. I’ve witnessed families bonds strengthen (family engagement, homework assignments), obtain jobs/promotion (helped with writing a resume/setting goals, follow through), food (food bank/resources), electricity (resources), homes/housing (resources), clothing (donations) just to name a few.

For the 2017-2018 school year, my child has been enrolled at Keiki Country I. The staff there exceeds my expectations. I applaud their service and dedication! Great rapport built with both the children and their families. Clean classroom. Very inviting and warm. I enjoy seeing the many different artwork (both on paper and projects) displayed in the classroom throughout the entire year. It’s so awesome that they let the children lead off of their interests. It’s nice to see them so engaged, eager to share how their day went and in such detail. I appreciated daily homework assignments. It gave me an opportunity to work with my child and help him to learn and grow. I especially appreciated the assignments being individualized to my child’s level and not a general assignment given to everyone in the class as a whole.

To conclude, this program is amazing! The staff here at Keiki Country I provided exceptional service! It really takes a village and I appreciate every single one of you for your support, encouragement and guidance! Thank you for helping my child grow on many levels and thank you for helping me to become a better mother.

Hā Initiative Collaborates with SCSEP in KEY Project Outreach

This week, HCAP’s Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After School Program collaborated with the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) in an outreach effort to engage the Windward community at KEY Project’s Multi-Purpose Community Center. HCAP staff from the Hā Initiative and SCSEP joined KEY Project staff on Wednesday for a kupuna breakfast. KEY Project provides free breakfast every Wednesday and Friday to members of their Kupuna Program. HCAP staff socialized with the members of the Kupuna Program and discussed the services and programs HCAP offers. The Hā Initiative also used the event as an opportunity to make connections and establish partnerships. Kaimuki Body & Brain Center, which was also at the breakfast event, warmed up to the idea of a possible collaboration with the Hā Initiative. Overall, it was a wonderful event with great food and friendly conversations.

Energy Saving Tips from the Weatherization Assistance Program

As you prepare for the warmest months of the year, keep in mind that the refrigerator is the second-largest user of electricity in the home. There are many ways to be energy conscious about refrigeration usage. One helpful tip is to limit the number of times and length of time the refrigerator door is open. Each time the refrigerator is open, it must re-cool itself to the proper temperature. Another tip is to allow hot foods to cool before placing them in the refrigerator. Following these two tips will help conserve energy. Keep cool this summer with energy savings!
