STEM Students Take Field Trip to Polynesian Cultural Center

This week at the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program, a 21st Century Community Learning Center, students who achieved good attendance were rewarded with an end of year educational excursion to the Polynesian Cultural Center. Students and their parents explored the Fijian exhibition area, learning about the the chief’s “great house” or Vale Levu, as they call it in Fiji. At the Vale Levu exhibit, the Fijian guide discussed how the chief’s house was built. The students and their parents also learned how the derua (bamboo stamping tubes) are beaten on the ground to make music and how to count musical beats. After the group explored Fiji, they then travelled to Tahiti and participated in tribal tattooing and a game of spear throwing; they also learned about the finer points of traditional Tahitian fishing. Their final journey was a canoe ride to the Pacific theater, where they learned about the mo’olelo (story, traditions, and legends) of Hawai’i.

Na Lima Hana Participant Obtains Employment

Not long ago, Rachelle was unemployed with no income. After submitting job applications and receiving no callbacks, she was starting to feel discouraged. Upon hearing about HCAP’s Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program from the American Job Center (formerly Oahu WorkLinks), Rachelle completed intake at the Leeward District Service Center and enrolled in the ECS Program. After completing Job Readiness Training (JRT), she applied for various jobs. Applying all of the interview skills she learned in JRT, Rachelle received a callback and is now an employee at a McDonald’s in Nanakuli. She attributes her newfound confidence and success in obtaining employment to the ECS Program. Right before starting her new job, Rachelle received work attire and shoes from the ECS Program. Rachelle is off to a great start, and the Leeward District Service Center staff has no doubt that she will be a valuable employee.

Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) staff recently visited the Senior Residence at Kapolei to organize and implement outreach and intake efforts for the program and complete small energy-efficient device installations. HCAP’s Leeward District Service Center has established a long-term partnership with Senior Residence at Kapolei, having provided intake for its residents for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

WAP staff gave free in-home energy audits to all those who applied. Small energy efficient devices including LED light bulbs and smart power strips were installed. WAP staff also educated residents on energy conservation and ways to lower their monthly energy bill. For more information about the Weatherization Assistance Program, please contact the HCAP Corporate Office at (808) 521-4531.
