Seniors in Kalihi celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in style this week at the Kupuna Independent Life Series at the Senior Residence at Maluhia. The day started with a delicious Irish breakfast of corned beef, cabbage and potatoes while listening to Irish folk music. The first presentation of the day was by Rob and Emily from Legal Aid, who spoke to the Kalihi kupuna about how to access legal services, as well as legal issues that affect seniors. Next, the kupuna had their final Week 6 Supplemental Food and Nutrition Education (SNAP Ed) Program class with Lori Matsuoka; they learned how to make a delicious, healthy smoothie and received a Certificate of Completion and Cookbook as they graduated from the program. After lunch, kupuna made St. Patrick’s Day cards to give to their friends and family for good luck.

Leeward STEM Students Learn How to Garden

This week at the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program’s Leeward STEM Exploration Center, students explored the world of gardening by planting strawberries, garlic, potatoes, and onions at a nearby garden. The students learned that gardening entailed a lot of work. They had to dig holes and prepare the soil before they could plant the seeds in the soil. Once they were finished gardening, they returned to the classroom, where they learned about the important nutritional and health benefits of each plant and where each of the plants originated. Each student was given a map and research materials and had to answer questions concerning plant origins and common medicinal and culinary purposes. Afterwards, students made sketches of their plants and developed a list of plant made products that can be found in everyday life. The class found the gardening activity both fun and educational.
