Household Benefits From Multiple HCAP Programs and Services

Shirley WAP_x640

Shirley was referred to HCAP’s Leeward District Service Center by a neighbor that recently received a solar water heater from HCAP’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). During Shirley’s intake, Leeward District Service Center Community Worker Leilani Ulu found out that Shirley was not working and referred her to the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Service (ECS) Program to get help with finding a job.

That same month, Shirley received a disconnection notice for her electric bill and applied for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) at Leeward District Service Center to prevent disconnection. Shirley and her family were able to benefit from WAP by getting their electric water heater replaced with a solar water heater and having their old refrigerator replaced by an energy star refrigerator. Shirley is very thankful for all the services that were provided to her and her family, and will be referring friends and family to HCAP’s services.

Kalihi Kai Head Start had their first open house of the school year. Open house allows teachers and parents the opportunity to create connections and establish ways for continued communication throughout the school year. Parents had the opportunity to walk through the classroom and go over classroom rules, procedures, and curriculum. Parents also worked with their children on a fun hand print activity.

HCAP’s Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program staff and District Service Center staff joined the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) staff during a recent training for SCSEP participants who have been assigned to HCAP offices and programs for their hands-on training. The Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program and District Service Centers serve as partnering training sites for some SCSEP participants.

The purpose of the training was to ensure that HCAP training site staff and SCSEP participants are informed of SCSEP rules, expectations, term limits, and code of conduct. Both HCAP staff and SCSEP participants were encouraged to actively participate and ask questions regarding program rules and expectations that will ensure continuous progress while participating in SCSEP. The SCSEP program staff also went over topics such as communication between participants and staff and what the SCSEP participants hope to gain from the HCAP training sites during their assignments.

Kalihi STEM Students Explore Gardening

This month, the students from the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program’s Kalihi STEM Exploration Center, a 21st Century Community Learning Center, explored the science behind gardening. Each student was given 5 different mystery seeds to observe. Throughout the month, students will observe, collect data and create a hypothesis about what vegetable will sprout out from each of the seeds. The class will also research different vegetables and learn about the length of time it takes to germinate and the length of time it takes until harvest. Can you guess what our mystery seeds will sprout into? We are all excited to find out. Happy Gardening!
