Kumuhonua Transitional Shelter Program
The Kumuhonua Transitional Shelter (Kumuhonua) in Kalaeloa, Barbers Point is a 70-unit transitional shelter with capacity to accommodate up to 140 adult individuals in safe, secure housing while they seek permanent housing.
Eligible individuals include adults transitioning from an emergency shelter, adults currently unsheltered, and adults at risk for homelessness.
Residents may stay at Kumuhonua for up to two years during which they address issues around education, employment, social skills, family reunification, and any other goals meant to stabilize their individual situations, improve their prospects for financial independence, and increase self-sufficiency, including obtaining and maintaining permanent housing.
At the shelter, Kumuhonua residents are offered case management services, job readiness training, and numerous workshops and self-improvement activities including smoking cessation, NA group meetings, disease management, basic computer, financial management, physical exercise, and life skills. Classes and workshops are planned and designed around residents’ needs and are geared towards helping them attain their goals. Residents also perform community service and participate in cleaning, maintaining, and securing the facility and its grounds.
Dedicated on-site staff ensures the efficient operation of the shelter in addition to working closely with residents to help them meet individual goals. The shelter staff consists of a Program Manager, Resident Manager, two Case Managers, and a Program Aide.
All studio units at Kumuhonua have their own bathrooms and are partially furnished. Each includes a small refrigerator and microwave. Residents are responsible for their own meals. Kumuhonua also has two cook-in kitchens, three laundry rooms, common areas, a lounge, and a computer lab.
Residents are required to pay program fees of $400/$450 per month, in addition to a $150 security deposit.
Kumuhonua is a program of the Honolulu Community Action Program, Inc. (HCAP) and is supported by the Hawaii Public Housing Authority, State of Hawaii.
