Malama Pono Mentoring ProgramThe purpose of this community-based project is to provide mentoring services to children and youth, aged 4 - 15, who have an incarcerated parent. Children with incarcerated parents are more likely to develop emotional and behavioral difficulties, including withdrawal, aggression, anxiety, drug abuse and juvenile delinquency. HCAP's program works with local faith-based groups and community organizations to pair these children with safe and stable adults from their own communities. The adults also model positive behavior for the children, give them someone to talk with, and provide a time and place of safety each week for the child. Malama Pono has been among the top mentoring programs of this type nationwide since starting in October of 2004. |
