Family Gains Life-changing Financial Stability Through ECS After Homelessness

Bronson and his family moved back to O’ahu from Arizona in 2024 and unfortunately found themselves homeless after their living arrangement fell through. He was referred to HCAP and they were immediately taken in for services at the HCAP Windward District Service Center. 

While completing their applications, they shared that they had no employment or income aside from child support. Bronson completed a Family Assessment so that staff could better understand their family’s situation and find what areas HCAP could assist them with. He and his wife, Crystal, both completed Job Readiness Training, as well as financial skills and budgeting training with the staff at Windward as the first step towards getting them back on their feet. By working closely with the family, HCAP staff were able to assist them with getting placed in an emergency shelter and assist Crystal with finding employment. The family eventually requested to pause HCAP services as they focused on getting back on their feet. 

In March 2026, Bronson was interested in taking the commercial driver’s licensing (CDL) program at Hoapili Trucking DBA Professional Driving Academy to reobtain his CDL Class A license. He turned to HCAP services once more and visited the Central District Service Center to apply for tuition assistance through HCAP’s Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) program.

At the time of his intake, Bronson was not employed and did not have an income. He and his wife, having five young children, were facing financial struggles due to having only one source of income, his wife’s workers compensation and State benefits such as SNAP.

Previously, Bronson already had a CDL Class A license and a job in the truck driving industry. Unfortunately, when his family started facing hardships of homelessness, he had to step away from the job and ultimately lost his CDL license. He shared that he was determined to finish the CDL program to re-obtain his CDL license and find employment again in the field that he loves. He wanted to support his family and help them regain financial stability. 

With the help of ECS, Bronson was able to pay for his CDL program at Hoapili Trucking. He excelled, and completed the course in just over a month. He received his certificate of completion, as well as his CDL Class A license very quickly after. In the very same month, he was also able to secure full-time employment as a CDL Refuse Roll Off Driver, with a starting pay of $29.00 per hour. 

This is a huge accomplishment and a huge financial relief for Bronson and his family. Bronson has successfully reached 60-days of employment and is enjoying his new job. He also now is able to provide full Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage for himself and his family. The family is taking huge steps towards their goal of financial stability.

HCAP’s staff is so happy for Bronson and his family and proud of the milestones that they are achieving. Staff are so grateful to be a part of their journey and wish them continued success on all their future endeavors.

STEM Students Take An Exciting Trip to Sea Life Park

Hā Initiative students from all STEM Exploration Centers came together for a fun-filled day of learning and exploration at Sea Life Park. Students had the opportunity to learn about a variety of marine animals, including dolphins, sea turtles, seals, penguins, birds, and many other fascinating species. Through interactive experiences and educational presentations, students gained a deeper appreciation for marine life and the importance of protecting our oceans.

In addition to the field trip, HCAP STEM started virtual STEM summer classes, providing students with engaging opportunities to continue learning from home. Recent lessons focused on ocean science, where students explored the five different oceans of the world and discovered the unique characteristics of each one. Students also learned about the different layers of the sea and the diverse creatures that live within them.

To make learning fun and interactive, students participated in a variety of hands-on activities, including ocean themed art, origami creations, and other creative STEM challenges. These activities helped reinforce key concepts while encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and curiosity. It has been an exciting start to the summer, and students are looking forward to many more engaging STEM adventures ahead.

Head Start Keiki Celebrate Motherhood

Head Start classrooms celebrated motherhood in the month of May. From photo shoots to shared meals, children showed their mothers and mother figures how much they are valued, loved and appreciated. Teachers encouraged the children to find out and learn more about their mothers as they participated in different activities. 

The children put their hard work and learning into practice with creating handmade art, letters and leis. Mothers and mother figures could be seen enjoying quality time with their children. Celebrations like these are very important for family and community connection.
