Kalihi STEM Students Present Tornado Experiment at Town Hall Meeting

This week, the students at Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program’s Kalihi STEM Exploration Center prepared for a science experiment and presentation at Ka’iulani Elementary’s Town Hall Meeting. From educational videos to lectures and quizzes, students were encouraged to learn as much as they possibly could about tornadoes, including how tornadoes are formed and where tornadoes usually occur. After gaining a better understanding of tornadoes, the students were finally ready to embark on their “tornadoes in a bottle” experiment. Applying their knowledge of atmospheric sciences, the students successfully replicated the scientific properties of air and water in a tornado and created a vortex of their own, using plastic 1-liter bottles and duct tape. The Kalihi STEM Exploration Center’s experiment and presentation was well-received at the Town Hall Meeting; many parents had fun taking part in the interactive experiment.
Youth Services Students Attend Oahu WorkLinks Youth Job Fair

Youth Services students attended a youth job fair held at Oahu WorkLinks’ Dillingham Office. Among the vendors at the job fair were Jamba Juice, Goodwill, GS4 Security, and HMS Host. Students were able to interact with different vendors, fill out application forms, and participate in on-the-spot interviews. Oahu WorkLinks staff provided the students with tips on how to fill out applications, what to do when handing in resumes, and proper interview etiquette. Many of the students walked out of the job fair with scheduled interviews. One of the students in particular – Raehvin Martin – was interviewed by a Goodwill representative and hired on the spot.
He’eia Head Start Children Visit RRR Recycling Services

As part of this month’s continuing unit on trash and garbage recycling, the children at He’eia Head Start took a walking field trip to RRR Recycling Services‘ Kaneohe location. With the help of their parents, the children were asked to collect 20 recyclable plastic bottles and aluminum cans days before the field trip. On the day of the field trip, the children brought their collected recyclables to the recycling center. For their hard work recycling, the children received $1 and an activity and coloring booklet from the RRR Recycling Services staff. It was a fun and worthwhile end to the class unit on recycling.
Leahi Kupuna Find Therapy in Music

Yamaura Kazumi, a music therapist from Sounding Joy Music Therapy, visited the Kupuna Independent Life Series at St. Augustine by the Sea to discuss with the Leahi kupuna the benefits of music therapy. Sounding Joy Music Therapy is a non-profit organization that provides sessions for groups and individuals and services for numerous facilities. Kazumi explained that music therapy can promote good health and wellness, enhance memory, and relieve pain and stress. It can also enhance memory, communication skills, and socialization in individuals who feel isolated. Kazumi also gave the kupuna a taste of what a group session is like. After the presentation by Kazumi, the kupuna were treated to an impromptu therapy session – by playing the drums, tambourines, and maracas.

Donation proceeds will benefit HCAP programs and services. This is HCAP’s second year participating in the Charity Walk, and we look forward to having an even bigger turnout than last year. Please encourage your co-workers, family, and friends to join you at Charity Walk ’17 or make a donation to support HCAP’s participation. Let’s make this a memorable day and represent HCAP well at this community event. You may register to walk or donate online through this link. Click here for more detailed instructions.
