Spring 2022 Kūpuna Independent Life Series Comes to an End
The Spring 2022 Kūpuna Independent Life Series recently wrapped up at HCAP’s Leeward District Service Center, and staff made the last day of class a special one, filled with fun, festivities and ono food. A guest instructor from Waiʻanae Neighborhood Place stopped by to teach participants how to grow their own food and educate them on the importance of self-sustainability. Each kūpuna received a kit with green bean seeds, which they potted, planted and watered.
Nursing students from Hawaiʻi Pacific University also joined to play a game of 21 Questions with the kūpuna. As the class came to an end, the kūpuna presented lei and a homemade thank you card to the instructor and students. Leeward District Service Center staff sent the kūpuna off with goodies, photos, and great memories, and are already looking forward to seeing them again in the fall.
The Kūpuna Independent Life Series is held twice each year, in the spring and fall. This free program provides kūpuna (age 55+) with health education and support to maintain their independence. For more information, call HCAP’s Leeward District Service Center.
HCAP Client Receives Wraparound Services and Obtains Employment
Quintin, a client of HCAP’s Windward District Service Center, is employed and well on his way to self-sufficiency after receiving wraparound services from HCAP and partner organization Poʻailani Inc. When he first reached out to Windward District Service Center, Quintin was a resident of Poʻailani Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides treatment services to dual-diagnosis individuals. Windward District Service Center staff worked with Quintin to develop an individual service plan that best fit his needs and goals.
Quintin completed a Job Readiness Training and received several job referrals through Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services. Staff worked closely with Quintin to update and submit his resume to various positions. Staff also provided Quintin with a box of non-perishable food items from the Kōkua Food Assistance Emergency Food Pantry, and a personal hygiene kit. Quintin soon found employment as a driver with VIP Transport, and received assistance purchasing his work attire through Nā Lima Hana.
“I am able bodied and love to work,” Quintin said. “HCAP and Poʻailani Inc. helped me get over the humps and red tape of receiving my identification, clothes, hygiene, and much more.”
Quintin still has many challenges to overcome and goals to work towards, but he remains motivated to continue on his path to wellness, and HCAP staff are proud of his progress.
HCAP Conducts Community Outreach at Local Health Fair
On Saturday, April 16, HCAP staff participated in a health fair held at Kanana Fou Congregational Christian Church to conduct community outreach. The event included a blood drive, as well as COVID-19 vaccinations and testing. HCAP was among several non-profit organizations and local vendors represented at the event. This health fair was a great opportunity for staff to share HCAP’s programs and services with the community, through handing out brochures and engaging with attendees.
Head Start Flower Shop
Kaʻiulani 1 Head Start keiki managed their own flower shop to expand upon their Farm to Early Care and Education planting activity. In small groups, keiki observed seed characteristics and sorted them by shape. While in the housekeeping center, keiki managed and shopped at a gardening store where seeds and potted flowers were sold. They counted their money aloud while purchasing flowers for a happiness bouquet to give to friends that were feeling sad. This activity helped keiki develop their higher level thinking, fine motor, self-help and mathematical skills.
HCAP Head Start & Early Head Start applications for the 2022-2023 school year are open now! Click Here for more information and how to enroll your keiki.
