Head Start Class Receives a Surprise from Windward Staff

Each year, HCAP’s Windward District Service Center collects personal donations of goodies and treats from family, friends, and the community to put Easter baskets together for one Head Start classroom. This year, Kainalu Head Start received 20 baskets filled with games, books, and school supplies. The smiles and light in the children’s eyes were glorious as they were so grateful for the personal surprise.

Family Receives a New Solar Water Heater through HCAP’s Weatherization Program

Verlene “Nani” heard about HCAP’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) through a friend who was a previous Weatherization client. Nani was concerned about her water heater which was not working properly, thus contributing to higher energy consumption and costing her family more on their monthly electric bill. Through the Weatherization Assistance Program, Nani was eligible for a brand-new, solar water-heating system at no cost to her! In further efforts to reduce her home’s energy usage, she also received energy conservation education and cost-saving devices such as low-flow showerheads, sink aerators, LED light bulbs, smoke detectors, and smart power strips.

Nani expressed her deep gratitude for HCAP’s services and is happy to have improved her home’s health and safety measures. Nani also shared that she has already begun encouraging her friends and family to apply for HCAP’s Weatherization program in hopes that they will also benefit from this great program.

Insects Galore at Head Start

As an extension to their study on insects, the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture’s Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle Response Team visited the Head Start keiki at Waipahu II. Outreach Specialists, Arisa and Sanna, shared information about the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle. They showed the keiki preserved beetles and grubs and explained how harmful and damaging they can be to coconut palms.

The Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) is a serious invasive pest. Oʻahu residents are urged to call the CRB Response Team for trapping assistance at 808-679-5244 or report to HDOA’s Pest Hotline at 808-643-7378.
