Na Lima Hana Participant Hired as a Mechanic

Edward was a Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services participant. He relentlessly worked with the Central District Service Center staff in order to find employment. Edward submitted a job application and resume, which he’d received help prepping, for an Electrician position at Young Laundry & Dry Cleaning. The receptionist at Young Laundry & Dry Cleaning glanced at Edward’s resume and saw that he used to be an Instructor for Basic Electricity. She immediately called her manager, who came in and asked Edward three electrical questions, which Edward answered with ease. The manager didn’t waste any time and Edward was hired on the spot! Edward completed all the necessary paper work to begin working as a Maintenance Mechanic. On his first day on the job, Edward’s manager told him that they decided to give him a higher starting pay, and that after his three months probation period they will consider giving him a pay raise!
Edward was grateful for the help he received from the Central District Service Center staff with creating his resume. Edward aspires to someday obtain his Master’s degree as a counselor and provide counseling to ex-convicts. The HCAP staff wants to wish Edward all the best with his new job!
Kumuhonua Residents Find a New Job, a New House, and a New Life!

When Kehau and Ka`imi moved in Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center, they met their challenges head on. Kehau had a minimum-wage job and Ka`imi was undergoing a series of medical issues that required several surgeries. As Ka`imi recovered from his ailments, Kehau researched new employment opportunities. It all came together when Kehau secured a new job that came with an increase in income. At nearly the same time, public housing offered this household a unit on the Wai`anae Coast. Moving into their new residence will mark the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. Congratulations Kehau and Ka`imi!
Hā Initiative Students Learn About Ecosystems

This week the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program students at the Windward STEM Exploration Center learned about ecosystems. The students explored an ecosystem with a two-liter aquaponics system. They learned that an ecosystem has living (biotic) and non- living (abiotic) factors that work together within the ecosystem. They were also able to visit the aquaponics system at Waiahole Elementary School. The students are having lots of fun learning all about ecosystems and are looking forward to the lessons to come!
Jack Hall Head Start Children Learn about Recycling

Children at Jack Hall Head Start are learning about recycling. They learned about different ways to recycle old items and make them useable again. Children brought in old socks and created sock puppets out of them. They also used buttons, pipe cleaners, glue, markers, streamers, etc. to create faces for their puppets. When done, the children gave their puppets names! This was a fun filled activity for the Jack Hall Head Start kids.
HCAP to Participate in Charity Walk ’16

HCAP will be participating in the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association’s Charity Walk ’16 on May 21, 2016. This is a great opportunity to get together with fellow HCAP employees, board members, and supporters to get some exercise, enjoy some food and entertainment, and get to know one another better, all at the same time.
Donation proceeds will benefit HCAP programs and services. We anticipate this to be the first of many years that HCAP will participate in this event. Please encourage your co-workers, family, and friends to join you at Charity Walk ’16 or make a donation on behalf of a Charity Walk participant. Let’s make this a memorable day and represent HCAP well at this community event.
Please contact tehanid@hcapweb.org for more information.
We look forward to seeing you at the 2016 Charity Walk!
