Kumuhonua Participant Gets a New ‘Do’ and a New Path Forward in Life

Shellyann is a participant at HCAP’s Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center. She is an upbeat, determined, and positive woman who is looking for a fresh start in life with help from HCAP and our staff.

Shellyann is in substance abuse recovery and has been doing great focusing, staying clean from substances, and moving forward with her life. In order to reach her goals, Shellyann is taking steps to improve her chances of gaining employment and financial security. She is currently working with HCAP’s Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program at the Leeward District Service Center to find employment, which would also allow her to obtain permanent housing. In the meantime, Case Managers at Kumuhonua have been working hard to help Shellyann gain confidence in herself, so they heard of a “beauty day” being put on by the Inner Beauty Foundation, they immediately thought of Shellyann.

Thanks to the Inner Beauty Foundation, Shellyann was able to have a beauty day at The Cutting Zone hair salon in Kailua! The appointment included a shampoo, haircut, and styling. Shellyann was also treated to lunch and sent home with a goodie bag of hair styling products to enhance her new ‘doʻ!

Shellyann looks amazing, and we can’t wait to see how her journey progresses as she forges her new path in life.

Windward District Service Center Client Reaches Her Recovery and Employment Goals!

Ipo’s journey began in August 2019, when she was houseless, living in Waimānalo. She came to HCAP’s Windward District Service Center seeking a chance to start over and make the changes necessary to become the best version of herself.

Windward District Service Center staff first referred Ipo to the Kāneʻohe Joint Outreach Center for immediate housing and substance abuse assistance. She was successful in reaching both goals, and moved on to receiving outpatient rehabilitation services from Hina Mauka

Ipo then continued working with HCAP staff toward her self-sufficiency goals. She enrolled in the Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program, where she received job readiness training to strengthen her resume and interview skills. Nā Lima Hana also assisted Ipo with getting a bus pass to attend job interviews, and she was soon able to secure employment.

Ipo currently supports herself, holding down jobs at both Big City Diner and a local security company. She also continues to receive outpatient services from Hina Mauka to support her recovery. Though she faced many challenges throughout her life, Ipo is now a “new woman,” according to the Windward District staff who first met her two years ago, and they are proud of her journey so far and her future potential!
