HCAP Head Start’s Main Office Moves to New Location

It is with great pleasure to announce that on September 5, 2017, we will be relocating HCAP Head Start‘s main office to 94-810 Moloalo Street, Suites 200 & 210, Waipahu, Hawaii 96797. The entrance to our new office will be directly facing Farrington Highway. Our phone number will remain the same at (808) 847-2400. Weatherization Staff Perform Outreach at Senior Residence

On August 31, 2017, HCAP’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) staff visited the Senior Residence at Maluhia to organize and implement outreach and intake efforts for the program and complete small energy-efficient device installations. HCAP has established a long-term partnership with Maluhia, having provided intake for its residents for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), as well as utilizing the site for the Kupuna Independent Life Series.

Approximately half of the residents at Maluhia received energy efficient devices such as LED lightbulbs, low flow showerheads and aerators, and smart power strips. WAP staff also educated Maluhia residents on energy conservation and ways to lower their monthly energy bill. Kalihi STEM Students Get Immersed in Technology

Students at the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After School Program’s Kalihi STEM Exploration Center participated in a variety of technology activities throughout the week. The week began with a PowerPoint lecture and quiz on the parts of a Lego EV3 model robot. In the following days, students took part in rotational workshops and learned a range of useful skills pertaining to computer programming and robotics. The students were given tutorials on how to program a Lego Boost Robot, how to type quickly, and how to use the iPad. Additionally, students learned how to code on iPads through apps such as Hopscotch Learn to Code, Swift Playgrounds, and Lego Boost. Students were offered extra academic practice through Khan Academy, a non-profit online platform that allows students to choose personalized learning content. The Kalihi STEM Exploration Center students are having fun and looking forward to learning more about technology and robotics in preparation for the FIRST LEGO League robotics competition in the fall.

Work Furlough Participant Gets Second Chance

As a participant of the work furlough program, Silva requested assistance from HCAP to help him obtain employment. After intake, he enrolled in HCAP’s Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program and attended Employment Preparation and Job Development classes. To help him with his job search, Silva requested assistance with transportation; thanks to HCAP’s partnership with Action with Aloha, Silva was able to receive a 2-month bus pass. In class, Silva completed and sent out job applications to various employers. He received an employment offer from Roberts Hawaii and is currently working as a driver with the tour and transportation company.

Silva qualified for his first incentive, offered through the ECS Program, by finding a job. He is now on his way to completing additional milestones such as retaining employment for 60 and 90 days. Silva is happy with his new job and is grateful for all the support given to him by ECS staff. HCAP would like to thank Roberts Hawaii for giving Silva a second chance in life.

HCAP District Staff Prepare for the Upcoming Kupuna Independent Life Series

HCAP staff Val Tavai, Reiko Sua, and Mae Althea-Gallardo attended the 1st annual Hawaii Community Health Worker Leadership Conference on August 25, 2017 in preparation for HCAP’s Kupuna Independent Life Series, coming this fall. The conference was specifically for health workers providing front-line and direct services to communities throughout Hawai’i. The Kupuna Independent Life Series provides health information and education for senior communities in Waianae, Kahuku, Kalihi and Honolulu. Leaders in the industry spoke of the difficulties in reaching minority communities without access to healthcare. HCAP staff hopes to integrate what they learned into the Kupuna curriculum.
