Tricycle Time with Head Start

The children of Head Start Keiki Country I had fun building and riding their new tricycles. They worked as a team and used tools to put together their tricycles.

After their tricycles were assembled, the keiki had a blast riding them around outside the classroom.

HCAP Partnership With U.S. VETS Serves Waiʻanae Community

Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services and Leeward District Service Center staff partnered with U.S. VETS Waiʻanae to help Paiʻolu Kaiāulu Shelter clients sign up for HCAP programs. In addition to employment assistance from Nā Lima Hana, HCAP staff informed clients about the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program, Head Start & Early Head Start, and more.

Building upon these outreach efforts, HCAP staff are collaborating with U.S. VETS to organize a job fair in Waiʻanae, which will give attendees an opportunity to meet with employers and connect with other service providers in the area. HCAP staff look forward to continuing to serve clients of U.S. VETS and the broader Waiʻanae community through this partnership.

Hā Initiative Students Experiment with Plant Growth

Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program students experimented with growing avocado trees at the Leeward classroom. As part of their Life of Plants: Gardening module, students placed avocado pits in three different kinds of environments to observe how they grew. One pit was half submerged in water, one was fully submerged in water, and one was wrapped in wet paper towels. Over the course of a few weeks, students saw that the half submerged pit sprouted a taproot, the fully submerged pit cracked but did not sprout, and the wrapped pit was unaffected.

The pit that developed a taproot eventually sprouted a 5-6 inch stem! The students then potted the developing plant in soil and started a self-watering system.
