New Partnership with Leeward Community College’s HINET Ho`ola Ike Program To Offer Wrap-Around Services to Low-Income Students

HCAP’s Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program (ECS) is pleased to announce an exciting, new partnership with Leeward Community College’s HINET Ho`ola Ike Program
Recently, ECS Program staff met with Leeward Community College’s Senior Workforce Coordinator, Michael Moser, and Educational Specialist, Dayna Lapina, to discuss building a partnership to provide wrap-around services to low-income students and their families. The HINET Ho`ola Ike Program, available at all University of Hawai’i Community Colleges, provides students with assistance for food, transportation, books and other expenses. Through this new partnership with HCAP’s ECS Program, qualifying students would also be eligible for vocational tuition assistance, employment assistance, and transportation. The partnership would offer students a broader range of support, increase their chances in obtaining employment, and ease financial stress.
Connecting with the Leeward Community College is just the beginning. The ECS Program staff will also be meeting with HINET Ho`ola Ike Program Coordinators from Kapi‘olani Community College, Honolulu Community College, and Windward Community College.
Our agency understands that strong partnerships are the key to success. Mahalo to all of our partners for helping our communities to grow stronger by working together!

Hā Initiative Students Learn the Difference Between Bacteria and Viruses
This week at the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program, a Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC), students learned about microscopic organisms and practiced social-emotional learning skills.
First, teachers taught the students the difference between bacteria and viruses. This helped the students better understand the current situation and why it is so important to create a sanitary environment. After learning about microscopic organisms, students explored different ways to express themselves in a healthy and productive manner. Teachers explained to the students that they may experience certain situations in which negative feelings might arise, such as not getting their way or covering up their sadness with happiness. The students learned different ways to healthily express their emotions and also shared stories from their own lives with one another.
It is very important, especially in times like these, that kids are given the opportunity to express their feelings. The Hā Initiative Program strives to provide students with a safe space to express themselves and better understand their feelings. If you are interested in getting your keiki involved with the program, please email hcapstem@hcapweb.org.
