We’re proud to have received a grant from the Starbucks Foundation Neighborhood Grants Fund, thanks to local Starbucks Partners (employees) in our community! HCAP has contributed significantly to economically disadvantaged communities through a variety of programs and services designed to alleviate the social, emotional and economic stress so often associated with poverty. The grant provided by the Starbucks Foundation will help the Honolulu Community Action Program, Inc. in achieving our mission of “POI: Providing Opportunities and Inspiration to enable low-income individuals or families to achieve self-reliance.”

A BIG mahalo again to Starbucks Partners (employees) and the Starbucks Foundation for recognizing how we are making our communities stronger! To learn more about the Starbucks Foundation Neighborhood Grant, visit their website.

Hā Initiative Students Explore Conductivity with Makey Makey Invention Kits!

This week the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program students were welcomed back to our school campus STEM Exploration Centers located at Lincoln Elementary School and Kaiulani Elementary School. The students began their first week back by exploring the Makey Makey, an Invention Kit designed to connect everyday objects to computer keys! Through the Makey Makey Invention Kit, the students tested the conductivity of various items located in their classroom. As the video shows, the Makey Makey Invention Kits can be used in very creative ways and the students had lots of fun using the kits to connect different everyday objects to their computers. The students also learned more about circuits and electronics to help prepare them for the upcoming FIRST LEGO League Robotics competition!

The Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program is now delivering in-person classes and we would love to welcome our keiki back to explore the worlds of STEM with us! To learn more about the program please email hcapstem@hcapweb.org.

Keiki Crossing! HCAP Head Start Children Learn about Pedestrian Safety

During their first week of the school year, HCAP Head Start keiki at Aiea 1 learned about pedestrian safety! Learning about traffic safety is a core component of returning to school, especially since children have been learning at home throughout most of the previous school year. HCAP Head Start keiki Tristin practiced walking on a pretend crosswalk in the classroom while also developing gross motor skills. Through this exercise, she learned to build confidence by choosing where to walk and finding the nearest crosswalk.
