Mahalo for Participating in #GivingTuesday

HCAP would like to thank all of our supporters who made a donation for #GivingTuesday 2014. Because of your generosity, we surpassed our goal of collecting $2,000 in monetary donations and had a significant increase in donors this year. Most importantly, HCAP’s #GivingTuesday campaign truly celebrated acts of generosity, selflessness, and the spirit of giving. From #UnSelfie photos to special community events and initiatives developed by the HCAP Main Office, Head Start, Youth Services, and District Service Centers, HCAP was able to engage staff, program participants, and the community to get involved in the spirit of giving.

Windward District Service Center Building Gets a Makeover

Photo of Windward District Service Center Painting
Windward District Service Center staff would like to send a big Mahalo to Hardware Hawaii Inc., Sherwin Williams, and volunteers from Windward Baptist Church’s Rebuilders Addiction Ministry (RAM) and Ohana of the Living God. Thanks to this community involvement, the Windward District Service Center building got a face-lift. Volunteers did a great job painting the exterior of the building. The staff are reminded each day as they walk into the freshly painted building that they have tremendous support from the community.

Head Start Children Learn About Sharing

Jefferson Head Start
Jefferson II Head Start children have been learning about sharing, and were asked to bring in something from home to share. Each child was asked to show the class what he or she had brought and then say a little something about the item. Toys, books, and stuffed animals were just a few things that the children brought. Each item was passed around the circle so the entire class could see the items, then they had group share time where everyone played together with the items. The children enjoyed sharing and being shared with.

LIHEAP’s Emergency Crisis Intervention Program Now Taking Applications

Photo of LIHEAP
HCAP’s District Services Centers began taking applications for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program’s (LIHEAP) Emergency Crisis Intervention portion of the LIHEAP program on October 1, 2014. The LIHEAP program helps families and individuals who have received a final notice of disconnection of their electric or gas, to avoid termination of services. Those interested in applying for the program should contact the District Service Center closest to them to obtain information on what is required to apply for the program. Those who qualify can get credit applied to their account on the same day, as long as the required documents and steps are completed. This portion of the program makes the LIHEAP program unique, in that it’s able to provide immediate assistance to those in crisis.

Ace Tufu, Kalihi-Palama District Service Center Manager attended a community stakeholders meeting at the Palama Settlement. The purpose is to establish a group of representatives from different Kalihi housing organizations, businesses, and service providers to create a forum for which concerns can be brought to the table and collaborations can develop. Topics discussed at the first stakeholders meeting were the processes of food bank distribution, security, property trespassing, and communication of programs and services. The group intends to meet on a regular basis at the Palama Settlement.
