Leahi District Joins in the 66th Annual Kapahulu-Moiliili Lions Club Christmas Parade

On December 14th, the Leahi District Service Center joined the Kapahulu-Moiliili Lions Club’s 66th Annual Christmas Parade. Lion Wendell Higa organized this year’s parade of around 25 community organizations, including the Kaimuki High School JROTC and Marching Band, Aloha Chinese Concept Association, Honolulu Fire Department Station 29, and many more!

Beginning from the campus of Kuhio Elementary School and ending on the fields of Old Stadium Park, HCAP staff were able to meet, greet, and share holiday treats with the neighborhood. Jalisa Hitto of the Leahi District Service Center shared, “I loved it! The fact that we were able to see the community come together and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas meant a lot to me.”

The Leahi District Service Center would like to extend their thanks to the HCAP Corporate staff, Weatherization Assistance Program staff, Kalihi-Palama District Service Center staff, Head Start Cluster 5 staff, and friends and family for joining their unit. On behalf of all of HCAP, mahalo to the Kapahulu-Moiliili Lions Club for graciously inviting the team to this joyous community event!

From Homelessness to Permanent Housing

Carla’s journey from homelessness to permanent housing is a true success story. After being homeless for six long years, Carla found herself at the HCAP Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center (KTLC). During her time at KTLC, Carla received support resources and assistance from her case manager to help her overcome the challenges that had led to her homelessness. With her case manager Makame Ranua, Carla was able to receive personalized support to address her specific needs which helped her develop the skills and knowledge necessary to maintain permanent housing. In addition, she was provided with transportation services which contributed to her securing permanent and stable housing.

Carla was also enrolled in the Steadfast Housing Development Corporation (SHDC)’s Supported Housing Program. Both HCAP Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center and the SHDC Supported Housing Program played a crucial role in Carla’s journey to permanent housing. Both programs provided her with the assistance and guidance necessary to navigate the complexities of securing and maintaining permanent housing. Through these resources, Carla was able to turn her life around, learn more about herself, make lasting relationships, and finally have a place to call her own.

Making Bread at Head Start

The Head Start keiki at Waipahu II are learning about bread. They explored different types of bread, investigated their characteristics, and learned how bread is made, the various types of bread consumed, and the professions that work with it. During Large Group, the keiki learned about wheat and its origin. They used their fine motor and sensory skills to create flour from ground wheat grains and make dough. They also transformed the Dramatic Play area into a bakery and pretended to be chefs and bakers. These bread-making lessons and activities are helping the keiki to gain tangible skills that promote self-sufficiency, teamwork, collaboration, and cognitive functioning.
