Kalihi STEM Learns About Astronomy with Hawaiian Astronomical Society Guest Speaker
At Kalihi Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program, students at Kaʻiulani Elementary school were excited to welcome guest speaker, Sapavith Vanapruks, from the Hawaiian Astronomical Society. Sapavith shared his experiences in astronomy while students had the opportunity to ask about his educational background. STEM student, Calum, asked, “I would love to study the stars. What did you learn in school to bring you here?”
Following the group discussion, students explored various pieces of astronomical equipment. Students took turns looking through the telescopes and identifying celestial and man-made objects in the sky. They explored astrophotography by analyzing images of the night sky. They discussed camera lenses, photography techniques, and settings that enhance photography. Their favorite activity was testing out the solar system model. This helped students visualize positions, size, rotation, and tilt of celestial bodies. While studying the earth’s solar system, many students proclaimed: “Now I get it. I see why we have seasons now.” With the upcoming makahiki season, students researched and shared Hawaiian myths about the night sky. They learned about the Hawaiian goddess Hina and her association with the moon, as well as Kāne and his association with the sun.

Thanksgiving Day at Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center
Every year, the Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center (KTLC) hosts a Thanksgiving Day event to bring a holiday meal to the community and KTLC residents. It is an opportunity for residents to engage with the people who share their love towards the homeless communities in the Kalaeloa and Ewa Beach areas. Volunteers from HI LIFE Renovations and Alliance Personnel Inc. came to help with giving out Thanksgiving food to the residents on this day.
The grateful participants lined up for the hot meal, refreshing drinks, and desserts. Those who showed up early helped with setting up tents and tables. Pili, owner of HI LIFE Renovations, and her ohana set up the food and spoke to participants about job opportunities while handing out business cards to those who were interested. The participants shared their gratitude, especially for the support received this holiday season.

Radford High School Career Day
Professionals from various lines of work gathered at the Radford High School Library in preparation for the school’s annual Career Day. While the HCAP Head Start staff presented on Early Childhood Education, the Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) and Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) staff spoke to students about services and programs that contribute to the possible careers under Human Services. Through four sessions, HCAP staff were able to engage the students in a case management activity and hold discussions on topics ranging from how to start a career in Human Services to how they, as community workers, are maintaining their mental health and a healthy work-life balance.
“The students were so respectful and attentive! It was such a pleasure to converse with such passionate individuals,” commented WAP Specialist, Hanako.
ECS Specialist, Ashley, remarked that “it was an amazing opportunity for students to get a closer look at the many career possibilities within Human Services. We’re so glad to have been part of it. Events like these are crucial for helping students explore different pathways and begin thinking about their futures.”
HCAP is enthusiastic about supporting students’ aspirations, whether through career advice, resources, or hands-on experiences. Career Day at Radford was just the beginning and we look forward to being a part of their journey
