HCAP was listed in the 2018-2019 Pacific Business News Book of Lists as the ninth largest Nonprofit Service Provider in Hawaii, as ranked by 2017 revenue. The Book of Lists is a compilation of lists that appeared in the weekly issues of Pacific Business News during the previous year.

Na Lima Hana Participant Obtains Employment

Cherviann was referred to HCAP’s Leahi District Service Center by a friend who had previously received employment services from the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program. Cherviann enrolled in the ECS Program in hopes of gaining employment. After completing her Job Readiness Training, Cherviann successfully secured a position as Retail Associate with Ross Department Store.

“I am grateful and happy that HCAP helped me with everything I needed. The Leahi [District Service Center] Office helped me with things that I don’t have access to and you guys made me happy because you’re are putting me in the right direction for me and my babies.”

Leahi District Service Center Community Workers are glad that they were able to assist Cherviann in finding employment and look forward to what she will accomplish in her new position.

“Blessed” is how this single mother of five described her emotions as she was handed a bucket load of gifts from Helping Hands Hawaii’s Adopt A Family Program. This year has been full of challenges and answered prayers for this mother and her children.

A year ago, Chyann was introduced to HCAP’s Leeward District Service Center through Ohana Produce; she and her family received fresh produce through the monthly food distribution. Through case management, Community Worker Lana enrolled Chyann into the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program and helped Chyann submit the required documentation needed for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program.

Chyann and her family were able to obtain permanent housing through Section 8. With the holiday season upon them, HCAP signed Chyann and her family up for the United Airlines Fantasy Flight and Adopt A Family Program. With these special gifts and a place of her own, she is feeling blessed and hopeful for a prosperous future in this new year. This is the positive outcome of good teamwork when HCAP works together with community partners to build a stronger community one family at a time.

The Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program Hosts Family Nights

Family Nights for the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After School Program, a 21st Century Community Learning Center, were held in the month of December. Students and families from each of the STEM Exploration Centers participated in hands-on holiday activities.

At the Kalihi STEM Exploration Center, students worked with their families in designing popsicle stick tree ornaments. At the Central STEM Exploration Center, students created beautiful colors by blending different colors together. At the Leeward STEM Exploration Center, students and their parents created triangle picture frame ornaments. At the Windward STEM Exploration Center, students participated in a clothespin glitter snowflake activity with Ms. Alaka’i integrating math word problems into the activity.

After all the hard work and fun, food and refreshments were enjoyed by all. The next Family Night is scheduled for March with family engagement activities for all.

Kumuhonua Resident Obtains Permanent Housing

In 2017, Raymond and his caregiver Irene became homeless due to unforeseen circumstances. Raymond suffered a stroke that left him physically and mentally impaired. In March 2018, Raymond and Irene entered the Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center in hopes of bettering their lives. During their stay at Kumuhonua, Irene worked at McDonald’s and was able to save money. Raymond, in the meantime, worked on recovering from his ongoing health conditions. Both Raymond and Irene also devoted their time and efforts to applying for permanent housing.

With the help of housing vouchers from Catholic Charities, Irene and Raymond were able to secure a permanent place of their own. Raymond and Irene moved into their new Pearl City home in November 2018. They were overjoyed and grateful for all the blessings they have received before the holidays.
