HCAP Assists Central Client Through Pandemic Hardships

Monica first contacted the Central District Service Center in November 2020 seeking assistance with her household’s overdue electricity bill. The Central District staff helped Monica and her family with the electricity bill and more through HCAP’s wraparound services. The staff referred Monica to Hale Kākou – CARES Act Assistance Program and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program to assist the household with their past due electricity. Monica also qualified for the Weatherization Assistance Program to help the household reduce their energy usage. The Weatherization program conducted an energy audit and equipped their home with energy-efficient lights, an 80-gallon solar water heater, and an energy-efficient refrigerator to help lower their energy usage.

Monica had also been actively looking for work after the pandemic affected her last job. Central staff referred her to Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services to help her achieve employment. Monica was hired at Queen’s Hospital earlier this year and Nā Lima Hana assisted her with getting work attire. Monica has stayed in touch with the Central District Service Center and updated staff with her employment endeavors. Monica has successfully maintained 180 days of employment and was able to receive gift card incentives from HCAP for making this milestone. The Central District Service Center is very proud of Monica’s accomplishments and wishes her the very best in her future endeavors.

Head Start Growth and Development

Congratulations to several Head Start & Early Head Start Family Advocates who successfully attained their Family Development Credential. Echo Sunday Tufu, Kalae Pedro, Britney Vogt, Sheyann Kiko-Gaspar, Jessica Carlson, and Shaina Kukui enrolled in a nationally recognized 5-month intensive course that equipped them with the skills and knowledge to effectively coach, support, and encourage families towards self-reliance. Head Start celebrates its staff and their major accomplishments!

The keiki at Pohakea Head Start also strengthened their development by using social-emotional skills while participating in a Second Step lesson focusing on asking for help. The children engaged in open conversation with the help of their social-emotional puppets, Star and Night, and their teacher. Some of the methods they discussed were, raising your hand, asking your friend for help, and asking a trusted adult to help you. Upon concluding the lesson, the keiki practiced the strategies they discussed when in need of help.

Windward Client Pursues Social Work Degree

Anjelita first came to the HCAP Windward District Service Center through a referral from Project Bridge at the Women’s Correctional Facility 5 months ago. At the time, she had transitioned into their work furlough program and needed job readiness training and employment. The staff immediately started working with Anjelita on her resume and interview skills. Once she was confident the Windward staff reached out to its employment partner, Tropical Farms, to schedule an interview. Anjelita was immediately hired and started a couple of weeks later!

Through Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services, Anjelita received work attire and a personal hygiene kit to prepare for employment. Anjelita continued to work hard through dedication and loyalty and has since been with Tropical Farms for over 90 days. Due to Anjelita’s employment success, she was able to transfer into a transitional shelter and is currently taking classes online toward her bachelor’s degree in social work. The Windward staff will continue to walk alongside Anjelita to insure her continued success and cheer her on!
