HPD Educates Kumuhonua Residents in Elderly Fraud Protection

The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) has implemented initiatives and presented comprehensive guidance on fraud protection and privacy for the elderly. Recently, the HPD paid the Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center (KTLC) a visit and taught a lesson on internet fraud and ensuring personal privacy.

As part of this effort, the HPD shared education and awareness resources with shelter participants. The HPD focused on providing key information about various forms of scams targeting the elderly, such as identity theft, fraudulent investments, lottery scams, phone and internet scams, and more. By raising awareness, the HPD successfully equipped participants with the knowledge necessary to identify potential scams and protect themselves.

Nā Lima Hana’s Partnership with Home Instead

HCAP’s Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) team successfully facilitated a partnership with Home Instead, a company providing personalized in-home care for the elderly. Home Instead was launched in 1994 with its founders Paul and Lori Hogan providing care for Paul’s 90-year-old grandmother. Their mission is to deliver compassionate, high-quality care to seniors to allow them to age safely in an environment and place that they are most comfortable in, their own home.

ECS has assisted with tuition assistance for vocational training to several of its clients, many of whom have been in CNA programs. Having this partnership with Home Instead is an awesome opportunity to be able to help CNA clients with job placement upon completion of their programs. However, Home Instead also allows for applicants with no experience and training to join their team, as they provide hands-on training for this type of work.

Home Instead offers in-house training, CPR certification, competitive wages and benefits, full & part-time shifts, paid training, and support for their Home Instead Care Pros (Professionals) to do a great job and make a difference every day in the lives of the clients they support. Some of the positions that they are always seeking to fill in for Office Assistants, CNAs, Caregivers, and Caregiver-Drivers. Home Instead Honolulu services the greater Honolulu area, Leeward, West, and Central Oahu, and even Haleiwa which allows them to match caregivers close to their homes. Care pros are responsible for companionship, light housekeeping, meal/snack prep, and other duties depending on the position in which the starting pay ranges between $18-$21.

Chinese Lunar New Year at Head Start

This month, the Head Start keiki at Daniel K. Inouye and Waiau Pre-Plus learned about the Chinese Lunar New Year. At Daniel K. Inouye, they explored the different ways it is celebrated food, traditions, clothes, music, and dance. They learned that the lion dances are done to scare away the bad luck for the new year and participating in feeding the lion money (li si) brings good luck. At Waiau Pre-Plus, the keiki read a story titled “My First Chinese New Year” in which they learned when, where, why, and how the Chinese Lunar New Year is celebrated. They also learned about the Chinese zodiac signs and created their own lanterns to use with other Chinese elements such as red envelopes, dragon puppets, and decorations for their dragon lantern parades.
