Central Client Completes Job Readiness Training
Konani is a single mother of two children and is the first in her family to work towards achieving a higher education. Konani was referred to HCAP’s Central District Service Center by Hawaii Medical College for help with tuition assistance.
Central staff were able to refer Konani to the Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) program and assisted her with completing the intake process. Through the program, she created a resume, participated in Nā Lima Hana’s Job Readiness Training, learned how to search for employment and how to prepare for job interviews.
Konani shared with staff that she wants to enroll in the Advanced Nurse Aide program at Hawaii Medical College, which will help her achieve her goal of becoming a caregiver. Konani also shared that growing up, her parents worked multiple jobs often day and night to provide for their family, and Konani wants to complete the Nursing program and secure reliable employment with benefits.
For successfully completing the Job Readiness Training, she was awarded Ross Gift Cards to help her have a running start to the beginning of her school and job searching. Central District Service Center is so excited and proud of the steps Konani has taken so far and looks forward to her reaching and achieving her goals.

Head Start Keiki Experimenting with Primary Colors
The Head Start keiki at the Jefferson II classroom expanded their knowledge of science and art through color mixing. With a focus on color recognition and increasing their vocabulary, the children learned about primary colors and engaged in an art experiment to discover what colors result from the mixing of two or three primary colors.
Using their fine motor and tactile skills, they mixed red, yellow and/or blue paint with their hands to create a different color. The children were excited about mixing colors as it helps to develop critical thinking, promotes inquiry and investigation, expands vocabulary and advances their cognitive development.

Leahi Staff Distribute Hope Bags at Salvation Army
HCAP’s Leahi district staff were able to share hope bags with the women at Salvation Army and community members, especially among the students. These hope bags were donated from Essential Bodywear and were filled with essential items such as toothbrushes, body wash, lotion, pads and tampons, underwear, and a thoughtful handwritten note all packaged in a handy belt pouch.
The Leahi district staff and members of the community are appreciative of donations like these, especially because it makes access to women’s needs easier. The recipients expressed their gratitude for the distribution of feminine hygiene products.
HCAP extends a big mahalo to Kate Soderstrom, Essential Bodywear’s Chief of Operations, for reaching out to HCAP with their thoughtfulness and generous support for women in the community.
