Head Start Box Car Race

The Head Start keiki at Nānākuli II concluded their study of boxes by engaging in a box car race. Leading up to the race, the keiki worked diligently with their parents to design, construct and finalize their individual box cars. While doing so, they developed their social, language, fine motor, mathematics, creativity, color recognition and shape recognition skills. The activity also provided an avenue for increased parent engagement within the classroom. The keiki were ecstatic about the box cars they created with their parents and were excited to present them at the race.

Nā Lima Hana Participant Graduates from CNA Program

Leimomi first came to the HCAP Windward District Service Center when she lost work hours due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Through her loss of income Leimomi realized that she needed a job that would give her a consistent paycheck, which led her to look for employment in the healthcare system. However, she lacked the certification to apply for the CNA job that she was interested in.

The staff at the district center partnered with Sydney Dickerson of the CNA vocational program at Windward Community College to get Leimomi enrolled in their classes, but the client expressed that she could not afford the full tuition. Windward District staff immediately enrolled Leimomi in HCAPs Nā Lima Hana program and she was approved to receive tuition assistance through the program. 

After six months of classes and exams, Leimomi graduated from the CNA Program and landed a job with Mānoa Care where she has been working consistently for the last 4 months as a CNA medical assistant. She has earned amazing incentives  through the Nā Lima Hana program like Target gift cards. 

HCAP is proud of Leimomi’s accomplishments and looks forward to her future success!

Intern Spotlight: Soncee Del Rosario

Soncee Del Rosario is a Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center Case Manager Intern. Soncee is from Wahiawā and has an educational background consisting of a GED from Leilehua High School, and a Bachelors in Criminal Justice from Hawaii Pacific University. Some hobbies she enjoys in Hawaiʻi include surfing, hiking, reading, painting canvas, exploring new locations, and pottery. 

This is Soncee’s first internship, but she has extensive experience volunteering in low-income communities, working with kids with disabilities, and elderly assistance. The knowledge and experience that she has gained has put her in a better position to be able to maintain the job duties and responsibilities in her internship. She is grateful for the opportunity to be able to assist this community in the best way possible for a brighter future ahead. 

Her future career goals after this internship with HCAP are to be accepted into law school and to become a successful defense lawyer. Something that she has learned from this internship is that patience and empathy in any high-intense situation goes a long way for every person involved. She shares “At the end of the day, we are all human, so why not be a human and help the person in need right next to you.”
