HCAP Head Start Keiki Play Pretend at August Ahrens I

HCAP Head Start keiki of August Ahrens I had fun playing pretend this week. Students Rylee and Jhexri used their imagination to create a pretend restaurant. They even took customers’ phone orders and created the special of the day: Chili Spaghetti and Fried Chicken!

Tyziahrae and Rylee then took their restaurant idea even further by adding a delivery option. The two used their creativity, problem-solving, and fine motor skills to build a locomotive to deliver food orders safely to their customers.

HCAP Head Start & Early Head Start is now accepting applications for the 2022-2023 school year! For more information and how to enroll your keiki, Click Here.

Kalihi-Palama Client Affected by Tourism Shutdown Gets a Fresh Outlook on Life

Sharon first came to HCAP’s Kalihi-Palama District Service Center looking for assistance with her past due utility bills. She was one of many local residents working in the tourism industry whose lives were turned upside down by the COVID-19 pandemic; Sharon was furloughed in March 2020 and by April found out the layoff would be permanent. .

Kalihi-Palama staff helped Sharon apply for the CARES Act-funded Hale Kākou Program for assistance with her utility payments. During the intake process, Sharon explained that she was eager to get back to working and supporting herself. Her old job allowed her to meet new people each day and she loved sharing recommendations and stories about Oʻahu with visitors from around the world. The pandemic had left Sharon unemployed and increasingly frustrated with her situation.

After hearing Sharon’s story, Kalihi-Palama staff recommended the Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program. Sharon was excited to enroll and begin searching for new opportunities. She is now caught up on utility payments and is working with Nā Lima Hana to secure a new job that meets her needs.

Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center Holds Holiday Decorating Contest

Last month, Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center held a decorating contest to bring participants some holiday cheer during these uncertain times. Program participants made ornaments and decorated their doors during December, and last week the winners were chosen. The decorating contest was a fun way to celebrate the holiday season at Kumuhonua while remaining safe and socially-distanced. The staff and residents are looking forward to doing it again next year.

Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Students Conduct Gravity Experiments

This week, Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program students learned about the concepts of force and gravity. Students learned that force is needed to make an object move, whether through a visible action like a push or pull or an invisible force like gravity. To demonstrate the use of different forces and how gravity acts on objects, the students played a series of games.

While they used their own force to push a yoga ball to each other and keep it airborne, they witnessed the invisible force of gravity pull the ball back toward the ground.
