Weatherization Client Obtains New Refrigerator
When Liana first heard about HCAP’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), she was excited to learn all of the different ways she could save energy in her home. Living in a two bedroom apartment with six people uses a lot of energy which results in high utility bills.
After connecting with a WAP Specialist, she turned in all the necessary documents within a week and received her approval for WAP services. The first step was conducting a home audit which went smoothly and the WAP Specialist presented the necessary educational materials that Liana found very helpful.
Liana and her household had received small measure replacements such as sink aerators, shower wands, and power strips. They even qualified to replace their refrigerator, all at no cost.
Liana was happy about her new shower wand working without leaks because the old shower head was leaking. She expressed her gratitude in receiving her new refrigerator and looks forward to the additional updates.

Head Start Keiki Learn the Capabilities and Limitations of Light
The Head Start children at 442 recently completed an activity where they learned about light refraction and filtering. With their current classroom study focusing on light, the children are learning about and investigating its capabilities and limitations.
They formulated hypotheses about what the sunlight would look like when filtered through shapes of various colors, developed their shape and color recognition skills and expanded their vocabulary through learning such words as filter, refraction, and hypothesis. As an extension of the activity, the children also observed their shadows, drew images of the filtered and refracted light and learned about the importance of light in their daily lives.

Windward Staff Distribute Essential Goods to the Community
The Windward district staff participated in the Ohana Food Distribution hosted by Key Project in Kahalu’u. Staff were able to talk about all of HCAP’s programs and services to everyone in attendance throughout the event while distributing necessary food for households in need.
The KEY Project hosts two food distributions per month, within their service district, to aid in providing food resources to over hundreds of households. The event is in collaboration with the Hawai’i Foodbank, area partners, and a multitude of volunteers.
In addition to the Ohana Food Distribution, the Windward staff continuously partner with community agencies, schools, and private companies to collect donated hygiene and food items to distribute to low-income clients that are actively seeking employment.
These clients go through the Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) intensive job readiness training which include learning basic computer literacy, job referrals, mock interviews, budgeting, and resume building.
Some of the products distributed to these clients include soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, shavers, etc. By providing these necessities, clients are able to feel more confident knowing that they are going into job interviews looking and feeling their best.
Windward staff would like to extend their mahalo to their partners at Ahuimanu Elementary School, King Intermediate, Ben Parker Elementary, St. Ann’s, and Le Mui Auto Detailing for their generous contributions.
