Kumuhonua Applauds Participant’s Commitment and Resilience Toward Permanent Housing

Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center (KTLC) celebrates the achievement of Diana, a program participant who recently secured permanent housing in January. Diana embarked on her journey at KTLC back in October 2023, demonstrating unwavering dedication to her path toward self-sufficiency. Throughout her time at KTLC, Diana maintained her scheduled meetings and diligently continued to work toward her goals. Diana was also a great asset to Kumuhonua staff and many participants here. Diana loves to cook so she would share her talents and cook meals for other participants at KTLC. Afterward, she would always ensure that the kitchen was clean. Diana would also be first in line to volunteer her time to help those participants who needed help in cleaning their units.

Diana has shared that after being homeless and living in shelters she is happy to finally have a place to call her own. Diana also stated that she would be forever grateful for all the help she received from the KTLC staff and her case manager, Carolyn Pule. The KTLC team applauds Diana’s resilience and commitment, recognizing the collaborative efforts that led to her successful transition, and wishes her the best of luck in this new chapter of her life.

Nā Lima Hana Assists Clients in Navigating Employment Challenges

Kandrik and Salmon recently moved to Oʻahu from the Marshall Islands and needed assistance in finding immediate employment. A family member and former client of HCAP’s Leahi District Service Center referred them to the office after hearing about Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS). After enrollment, ECS assisted Kandrik and Salmon with making resumes, scheduling interviews, and providing HOLO cards for transportation. Within the same week of completing their intake forms, one of HCAP’s partners at Block by Block was able to meet with Kandrik, while Salmon had an interview with Jinya Ramen. A few days after his interview, Salmon informed the Leahi staff that he received a job offer and they were able to help him get his initial set of work clothes.

Kandrik and Salmon shared that they were comforted by being able to communicate with Leahi staff in Marshallese which lessened the challenge of navigating job-hunting in an unfamiliar county. Leahi staff will continue with Kandrik and Salmonand would like to thank the ECS program for its continuous support to the community.

LIHEAP Client Grateful for the Weatherization Assistance Program

Stella applied for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) with HCAP’s Kalihi-Palama District Service Center last year. During the application process, she was referred to the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) for further help managing her electric bill by receiving free, energy-efficient devices for her home. She hoped for assistance with issues related to her water heater as it was an older system with rust at the base of its tank and a leak from one of its panels.

Upon qualifying for WAP services, she was scheduled for a home energy audit in which WAP staff members were able to provide her with devices such as a low-flow shower head, smart power strips, and LED light bulbs. They also provided her basic education on energy-saving tips for her and her family to practice. Soon after the completion of her home audit, Stella was excited to learn that she would be receiving a brand-new solar water heater installed at no cost to her family! Stella expressed that she had no idea that these types of services were available in her immediate community and is extremely grateful for all that she had learned and received through HCAP’s programs.
