In partnership with the IRS and as part of the Hawaii Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) & Financial Empowerment Coalition, HCAP’s Income Tax Services/ Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Program will be offering free tax preparation services from February 1, 2019 to April 5, 2019. As part of the program, HCAP will also be helping working families and individuals receive the federal tax credits they have earned.

The success of the Income Tax Services Program has been tremendous. Last year, 760 taxpayers electronically filed their federal returns at the Honolulu Community Action Program’s sites, with returns totaling $1,238,460.

Returns are prepared for working Hawaii families that have an adjusted gross income (AGI) of less than $55,000 are required to file a relatively simple federal return. Volunteer preparers will e-file both the federal and Hawaii State return for FREE.

HCAP Head Start’s Recruitment Day is a Success

Photo of Head Start Recruitment

On January 4th, HCAP Head Start staff conducted widespread recruitment for Head Start and Early Head Start’s early learning programs at housing complexes, schools, medical clinics, and local stores. It was a collective effort for HCAP Head Start as everyone pitched in, including staff from HCAP’s Central District Service Center, Leeward District Service Center, and Windward District Service Center, who helped out with door-to-door canvassing in their respective neighborhoods in Mākaha, Aiea, and Kaneohe. A few days before recruitment, HCAP Head Start Family Advocates prepared applications, flyers, and brochures for the canvassers.

On the day of recruitment, HCAP Head Start staff recruited door-to-door in various communities, posted flyers at businesses, and made their presence known in the communities that Head Start classrooms are located in. Overall, it was a productive and rewarding day for HCAP Head Start; it gave staff the opportunity to meet and reach out to new people who may have not heard of the Head Start program before.

Head Start Parent Obtains Employment Through Na Lima Hana

Hokunani, a Head Start parent, was referred to HCAP’s Windward District Service Center by HCAP Head Start Family Advocates. She came to the Windward District Service Center Office, where she was able to sign up for the monthly Ohana Produce food distribution as well as enroll in the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program.

After completing Job Readiness Training (JRT) through the ECS Program, Hokunani was hired at the Target store at Kapolei Commons. She was offered an overnight position, which was ideal for her and her daughter’s schedule. Hokunani is thankful for the pre-employment training she received through JRT and believed it helped her land the position at Target.

Every year, the children of HCAP Head Start are given the opportunity to enter the annual calendar contest by putting their artistry skills to work. Choosing from an overwhelming amount of beautiful drawings from such gifted little artists is never an easy task.

Twelve drawings were selected and will be recognized on January 24, 2019 at the Head Start Policy Council Meeting, where the contest winners will receive their very own book. Thank you to all of the students who submitted drawings for the 2019 HCAP Head Start calendar.
