HCAP is pleased to announce that Denise “Kehau” Miya has been promoted to Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program Manager. She will be responsible for the overall development, promotion and implementation of the program.

Kehau has a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education Administration from Ashford University and a Master of Education degree with an emphasis in Child Development from Chaminade University. She has more than a decade of experience in the educational field, including teaching, program management, administration, and curriculum development and implementation.

Most recently, Kehau has been serving in a dual role as the Hā Initiative Program Specialist as well as the Teacher for the Windward STEM Exploration Center at Waiahole Elementary School. She has been instrumental in collecting and analyzing program data, developing STEM curriculum, lessons, and activities, and implementing them in the classroom.

Robert Piper, HCAP Executive Director, states “Kehau has been very successful at developing strong relationships with program staff, parents, students, and community partners, as evidenced by the program participation numbers and thriving classroom environment at the Windward STEM Exploration Center. We are very fortunate to have her take on a larger role in the program and work more closely with all of HCAP’s STEM Exploration Centers.”

HCAP congratulates Kehau on her promotion, and looks forward to building on our successful STEM program available to students in grades 2-8 at five locations on Oahu.

The children at Jefferson Pre Plus Head Start created their own binoculars out of recycled tissue rolls. Once everyone had finished painting their binoculars sky blue, it was time for an outdoor stroll around the Waikiki area. The children used their binoculars to focus on specific things of interest. Later, the children were asked to recall what they saw through their binoculars by drawing them on paper. This activity was a great way to promote physical, cognitive, and language/literacy skills in young children.

HCAP Head Start Selects 12 Drawings for 2017 Calendar

Photo of Head Start Calendar

The HCAP Head Start program held its annual calendar contest recently. Our Head Start children were invited to submit drawings of their favorite storybooks. Although every submitted artwork was a winner in our eyes, only 12 could be selected for the 2017 calendar. On behalf of the HCAP Head Start program, we would like to extend a huge mahalo to all of the classrooms, children and families that participated.
