Families Receive Ready to Learn School Supplies

This year, HCAP’s Central District Service Center staff is expecting to provide over two hundred families with school supplies through the Ready to Learn (RTL) school supply drive operated by Helping Hands Hawaii. Many families applied for the drive at one of HCAP’s five District Service Centers back in June. One of the families that applied was a military family.

The family first heard about the RTL school supply drive through Wahiawa Elementary Pre Plus Head Start, where one of the children was enrolled in preschool. With the son entering kindergarten and a daughter moving onto third grade this fall, they were extremely happy and grateful to be receiving free school supply starter kits for the upcoming school year.

The RTL school supply drive is dedicated to providing households in need of school supplies with the tools necessary to be successful in the classroom. The RTL school supply drive helps put free school supplies in the hands of thousands of families.

Several HCAP District Service Center Staff have started to send out letters and make phone calls to families who applied to receive free school supplies. If you have applied with a nearby District Service Center, please call the District Service Center to arrange a time to collect the school supply starter kits for your children.

WAP Client Receives New Solar Water Heater and Energy Star Refrigerator

Christy was referred to the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) in April upon her visit to the Leeward District Service Center office. Christy lives in a multi-generational household of seven people and was looking for a program that would reduce energy costs. With her electric bills being consistently high, Leeward District Service Center’s Community Worker referred Christy to WAP, a program that helps low-income households reduce energy consumption.

Christy wasted no time in gathering all the required documents needed to apply for WAP. A few weeks after submitting her application, Christy was approved for services and received a home energy audit. During the home energy audit in May, Christy found out that she was eligible to receive a new solar water heating system and an Energy Star refrigerator. Last month, installations for both the solar water heating system and the Energy Star refrigerator were completed.

Leeward District Service Center staff also referred Christy to the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for additional assistance on her electric bill. In June, she applied for LIHEAP’s Energy Credit Program. Christy also expressed interest in receiving fresh fruits and vegetables at the Leeward District Service Center’s Ohana Produce food distribution. With a new baby on the way, Christy is looking for different ways to save money.

Back in January, Keith completed group intake for the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program that was administered by Central District Service Center staff at the Waiawa Correctional Facility.

As a Na Lima Hana participant, Keith received a variety of services, including Job Readiness Training, mock interviews, and assistance on developing his resume. The following month, Keith was transferred to the Oahu Community Correctional Center (OCCC) Module 20 Work Furlough Program, where his main focus was to obtain employment. Keith reported no income, so to provide him a hand-up on his job search, the Central District Service Center provided Keith with a basic hygiene package.

In March, Keith contacted Central District Service Center with good news: he received a job offer as driver with Enoa Tours Corporation. With ECS Program funds, Central District Service Center was able to help Keith obtain the necessary work clothes and shoes to start work immediately.

Recently, Keith submitted a verification of employment form, which confirmed not only his current employment status as a full-time trolley driver, but also showed that he had recently received a pay raise! Central District Service Center would like to congratulate Keith for reaching several milestones.
