Nā Lima Hana Partners with Genesis College Hawai’i

The Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program (ECS) continues to make partnerships with vocational training schools to provide more opportunities for HCAP clients to obtain their academic credentials. The ECS team recently added Genesis College Hawaiʻi to the list of approved schools and enjoyed a tour of their unique facilities.

During the tour the ECS team met with Hillary Fraser, Director of Admissions & Students Services; Crista Aguano, Chief Operating Officer 5 Minute Clinic; Ronald Claxton, Director of Education; and Denise Reyes, Admissions and Student Services Coordinator. Information was exchanged regarding the school’s Pharmacy Technician and Medical Assistant Programs and HCAP’s wrap around services. The Pharmacy Technician and Medical Assistant Programs are 12 months long and students become certified with the opportunity for immediate job placement with annual salaries ranging from $32,000 to $49,000.

Genesis College Hawaiʻi students gain not only their formal education, but hands on training, and the experience that is necessary to gain employment once they complete their program. With many of these students struggling to pay for their tuition out of pocket, The Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program becomes a key component in assisting these students with tuition assistance to help to offset the cost of their expenses, and help them achieve their goals.

Exploring Colors and Counting with Early Head Start

HCAP Early Head Start East II keiki are developing their cognitive skills through color recognition and counting. Sarah counted, identified, and sorted colorful straws and pom poms. Avi fished for plastic sea animals and counted how many red and green ones were in her net. Maverix used interlocking toys to learn the colors blue, pink and yellow. Color recognition skills assist children in identifying objects and developing descriptive language skills that are needed for communication. Counting skills are associated with problem-solving and math skills that help children to understand the world around them!

Central District Service Center Client Receives LIHWAP Assistance

HCAP Central District Service Center client Antoinette is a recently retired senior living on a fixed income. She originally planned to find a part time job to keep her mind and body active, but unfortunately her plans had to be put on hold due to health issues. Antoinette has been hospitalized for 2 months with a chronic medical condition that has left her housebound. Without a consistent source of income, she was living in fear of both her electric and water services being disconnected. Antoinette decided to reach out to HCAPs Central District Service Center for assistance with her financial challenges.

The Central District Service Center understood Antoinette’s challenges with her health, and brought HCAP services to her home during a visit. Antoinettes social security income was enough to cover her rent, but not enough to maintain all her monthly expenses. Unfortunately, due to the state income limits, Antoinette was not eligible for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), but she did qualify for the Low-Income Home Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP). She applied for LIHWAP and received assistance in paying her water bill. Antoinette has kept an extremely positive attitude throughout her journey and shares “Since HCAP was unable to help with the electric bill, I am thankful for the assistance with the water bill.”
