HCAP Holds Annual Board Governance Training

On Friday, July 20th, HCAP held a Board Governance Training for its Board of Directors. The training was held at the HCAP Corporate Office, and was presented by HCAP Executive Director Robert Piper, Esq., MBA, HCAP Head Start Director Grant Kogami, Director of Community Services Tehani Diaz, and Director of Planning, Program Development and Communications Michael Hane.

HCAP provides this annual training to ensure all Board members have an understanding about the framework of nonprofit agencies and are aware of their duties and responsibilities as Directors. This training is one of the elements of the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) Organizational Standards, and is provided to both new and returning Board members. A prior session for Board members was held on April 13th.

This training is essential in conveying best practices of a nonprofit Board and ensuring that the HCAP Board continues to provide strong stewardship of HCAP’s mission.

Na Lima Hana Participant Obtains Employment

Photo of ECS Bambi

In June, Bambi came to the Kalihi-Palama District Service Center to apply for the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Bambi needed assistance because she just had benefits cut and was not able to keep up with her bills. Kalihi-Palama District Service Center staff recommended that she enroll in HCAP’s Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program. Following enrollment in the ECS Program, Bambi took Job Readiness Training (JRT) classes, where she received assistance with resume writing and leads on potential jobs. Soon after completing JRT and submitting applications, she got hired as a steward at the Hawaii Convention Center. Bambi started out as an on-call employee and is hopeful that it will become a permanent job.

SCSEP Establishes New Partnership with Kahumana

The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) staff established a new partnership with Kahumana, which operates Ohana Ola O Kahumana Transitional Housing and the Ulu Ke Kukui Transitional Shelter. Kahumana offers multiple training opportunities at their transitional shelters: these opportunities range from clerical work to classroom experience at their daycare. SCSEP staff would like to thank Kahumana Development Officer Sue Austin for taking on a SCSEP participant as an office clerk trainee. SCSEP looks forward to placing more of their participants with the organization.

WAP Completes State Monitoring

This month, HCAP’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) underwent monitoring by the State of Hawaii, Office of Community Services (OCS). OCS program specialists inspected client files, procedures, and installation processes to ensure everything was done properly. OCS program specialists were able to conduct some home visits with clients as well.

Home visits are an integral part of the OCS monitoring. During one home visit, we were able to check up on one of our clients, Auntie Ulu. Auntie Ulu is an influential native Hawaiian who takes pride in her home in Kahana Valley. With the help of WAP, she was able to receive a free solar water heating system. Along with the energy education provided by WAP staff, the solar water heating system is expected to result in a substantial reduction in her utility bill. It was a great opportunity to show OCS the positive impact WAP is making in many local communities.
