Windward Client Achieves Greater Self-Sufficiency
Natasha is a single mother of three children who first reached out to HCAP’s Windward District Service Center seeking assistance with her past-due electric bill. Community Services Manager, Sonny-Jean immediately had Natasha come into the district center to complete a full HCAP intake and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) application for emergency services. During this time Natasha also completed a family assessment showing the need for stable income. Sonny shared with Natasha about HCAP’s Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services and immediately got her enrolled. With an eagerness to improve her household situation, Natasha completed the Job Readiness Training that included interview skills and resume building and began searching for a full-time job with benefits. Within a week Natasha had an interview scheduled with long-time district partner; Hina Mauka. One week later she was hired on the spot and was ready to start her new employment adventure.
Natasha has been a dedicated and loyal employee of Hina Mauka for the past eight months and loves her job. She is able to give back to her community and most of all help other single parents set and accomplish goals to secure a bright future. The staff at the Windward District Service Center wish Natasha and her ‘Ohana continued success towards self-sufficiency.

Head Start Staff Prepare for the New School Year
Annually, the Head Start & Early Head Start programs engage in Pre-Service preparation for several weeks before the school year. Staff engaged in component-specific training that focused on classroom management, curriculum implementation, health services, family services and engagement, and First Aid/CPR training. This preparation also includes a “Pre-Service Day” where all program staff participate in mandatory training, team building, and guest speaker presentations. This year’s Pre-Service Day was held at Pearl Country Club. The presentation by guest speaker Makana Risser Chai focused on stress management. Feliciana Lewis spoke on fatherhood engagement within Head Start & Early Head Start programs. Sergeant Kaipo Paiva gave a training on active shooter response.

KTLC Participant Celebrates His Employment and Permanent Housing
Staff at the Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center (KTLC) would like to congratulate Kingston who secured permanent housing in July. Kingston entered the KTLC one year ago and has worked extremely hard in making steps toward moving to permanent housing and self-sustainability. Kingston shared that he has had challenges with obtaining employment, especially with applying to various places and not receiving callbacks. Working alongside his case manager and HCAP’s Kalaeloa District Service Center, Kingston was able to secure employment which allowed him to save money to use for his deposit and first month’s rent. With his newfound self-sustainability, Kingston was able to move with his friend to a place in Honolulu. Kingston stated that he is so happy to have a place of his own and thanks everyone who has helped him throughout the process. Kumuhonua staff wishes Kingston the best of luck in this new journey in his life!
