Hā Initiative Staff Attend North Shore Back to School Bash

Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program staff participated in the North Shore Back to School Bash at BYU-Hawaii on Saturday, July 22. The event, hosted and organized by Project Vision, featured live music, free school supplies and haircuts, food trucks, games, and community service providers from throughout Oʻahu. Hā Initiative staff teamed up with MadSci Lab to provide families with fun, hands-on science activities. Staff helped keiki make slime from glue and contact solution, create pigment art with spinach and crushed raspberries, engineer paper helicopters, and study their own fingerprints.

HCAP Head Start & Early Head Start staff also attended the event to hand out goodie bags and share information with parents about their early childhood program options. Staff connected with nearly 175 North Shore families who visited HCAP’s booth during the event.

Keiki in Need Receive School Supplies from HCAP through Ready to Learn

HCAP’s District Service Centers provided school supplies to 120 Oʻahu keiki in need, partnering with Helping Hands Hawaiʻi’s Ready to Learn program. HCAP is one of several social service agencies that participate in this statewide initiative each year to distribute school supplies to children from low-income families. Last week, 70 families visited HCAP’s District Service Centers to pick up school supply kits for their keiki. The kits included folders, composition books, pencils, crayons, markers, and other common supplies students of all ages need for the new school year. District Service Center staff also worked with families to assess their needs and refer them to other HCAP programs and services.

HCAP would like to thank Helping Hands Hawaiʻi and all of this year’s Ready to Learn donors for making this program possible.
