Windward Mother Achieves 180 Days of Employment

During an outreach event, the Windward District staff met Ashlyn, a single mother of a five-year-old daughter. Ashlyn shared that she was unemployed and seeking employment. The staff promptly introduced Ashlyn to HCAP services and immediately enrolled her into the Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) program where she completed the Job Readiness Training, updated her resume, and learned about time-management and interview skills.

Windward staff assisted Ashlyn on her job search through sharing employment leads and helping her apply to a few businesses. She was able to secure employment at Goodwill Industries which allowed her to accommodate her daughter’s school schedule.

Through her continuous efforts, Ashlyn met her milestones and soon completed 180 days of employment. To acknowledge her achieving such a milestone, she received a target gift card.

HCAP would like to congratulate Ashlyn on accomplishing her milestones and looks forward to Ashlyn continuing her journey of becoming self-sufficient.

The Start of Another Amazing School Year

As teachers usher in the start of a new school year, parents and guardians across HCAP’s Head Start & Early Head Start programs are engaging in Home Visits and Transition to Head Start workshops as a means of orientation with program staff, program policies and procedures, facilities and early learning environments.

This vital aspect of parent and family engagement fosters the establishment of a secure relationship and foundational understanding of the programs’ philosophy, educational curriculums and the role they play in their child’s early learning experience. Through connecting with other families and program staff, a deeper sense of community and trust are created. Head Start & Early Head Start staff are excited for all that the upcoming school has in store for the children, families and program!

Weatherization Staff Attend Housing Stability Services Resource Fair

HCAP’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) team attended the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) Housing Stability Services Resource Fair on July 18th.The event was held at the Nanakuli Boys & Girls Club where HCAP’s weatherization staff, along with other agencies, participated in the event to showcase the wrap-around services HCAP can provide to the Nanakuli community.

The WAP staff spoke with attendees about how Weatherization can help their families save money on their Hawaiian Electric (HECO) bill. They explained that the program assists not only homeowners, but renters as well. WAP staff also shared that those who qualify for the program could replace some of their large appliances such as refrigerators or water heaters to energy efficient ones for free. Many of the eventgoers admitted that they had not even known about WAP and were excited to learn how they can apply and qualify.

“It was good meeting different walks of life from around the island and it was a good opportunity to introduce the WAP services,” said WAP Specialist Shawn.

The HCAP Weatherization staff thanks the kind hosts of CNHA for the opportunity to participate in this amazing event!
