Central Client Receives HCAP Wraparound Services on Road to Self-Sustainability

Jerry was referred to HCAP’s Central District Service Center by the Board of Water Supply for assistance in preventing disconnection of their water services. Jerry and her significant other raise three young children. Jerry was able to participate in a group appointment where staff assists families with water crisis intervention. Jerry was also actively looking for work at this time, to which the Central District staff referred her to the Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program. She was able to participate in the program’s Job Readiness Training (JRT) class, where staff gave her assistance in updating her resume, job search guidance, and job interview preparation.

Shortly after the JRT, Jerry reported that she was able to secure employment at two different jobs. She shared that on weekdays, she works as an Assistant Manager of Accounting at Screen & Things, while on the weekends, she works as a Personal Shopper at Sam’s Club. Jerry stated she enjoys the differences in the two types of employment. She appreciates the balance of a stable career that engages her love for math and a job where she can be mobile and away from the computer screen.

Jerry was able to submit verification of her maintaining employment for 30, 60 and 90 days. She stated that it is within her nature to be constantly busy, and now that her youngest child has been enrolled in HCAP’s Head Start program, her partner will have the flexibility to obtain employment as well. Jerry also expressed her gratitude for HCAP’s assistance and that the range of programs that she was able to receive services from had improved various aspects of her life. Further, she remarked that seeking HCAP services brought her a step closer to becoming self-sustainable.

The HCAP Central District Service Center is excited to follow Jerry and her family on their journey and will continue to support them in their endeavors.

Pre-Service For Head Start & Early Head Start Staff

Annually, HCAP Head Start & Early Head Start staff engage in Pre-Service preparation spanning across several weeks. Staff engage in component specific training that focus on classroom management, curriculum implementation, health services, family services and engagement, and First Aid/CPR.

This year’s preparation included guest speaker, Sandy Ampudia, from The Discovery Source. Sandy provided an extensive training on the Pyramid Model Kits that are utilized in the classrooms and during home visits. These kits aid in supporting a tiered approach to children’s development of positive interpersonal relationships, self-regulation skills, and social-emotional skills.

Kalihi-Palama Client Receives Tuition Assistance for Phlebotomy Courses at HMTC

Mary Claire was referred to HCAP’s services by another client who previously participated in the Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) program. She turned to the Kalihi-Palama District Service Center to discuss with staff about how HCAP can assist her through her employment journey.

Mary Claire needed help with finding employment opportunities. She relocated to Hawaii from the Philippines 10 years ago and had been working up until the COVID-19 pandemic affected her job. Mary Claire, like many others, had to stop working due to the pandemic and has not been able to work since.

She persevered through with a passion for helping people and was informed by Kalihi-Palama staff about an opportunity that would fit her. With the help of Nā Lima Hana services, Mary Claire received tuition assistance to attend Hawaii Medical Training Center (HMTC) in order to become a certified phlebotomy technician. She started her classes in July and will complete the program by the beginning of August.

HCAP staff will continue to support Mary Claire in her future endeavors and look forward to seeing her pursue her career in the medical field.
