One Year Later: HCAP Program Participant Continues Reaching Her Goals

In July 2020, HCAP announced that Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program participants would be eligible to receive tuition assistance for vocational training programs at partner schools. Andrea was one of the first to take part in the new initiative, and was able to enroll in the Pharmacy Technician Program offered by the University of Hawaiʻi Kapiʻolani Community College with the help of tuition assistance from Nā Lima Hana. 

After seven months of classroom instruction and hands-on experience, Andrea completed the Pharmacy Technician Program and received her Certificate in February 2021! She then started applying for jobs in her new career field, and was hired as a Pharmacy Technician at Longs Drugs. By June 2021, Andrea had surpassed 90 days on the job and continues to find success in her new position.

HCAP Receives Additional Funding from Friends of Hawaiʻi Robotics

Honolulu Community Action Program, Inc. (HCAP) would like to give our warmest mahalo to Friends of Hawaiʻi Robotics for their contribution to HCAP to cultivate and sustain Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) and robotics programs in Hawaiʻi. HCAP’s Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program will collaborate with schools and STEM and robotics organizations/teams to further these goals. 

The Hā Initiative Creative STEM After‐School Program allows students in Grades 2-8 to explore the world of STEM in a fun and creative environment. The program is free and provides students with snacks, tutoring, and an opportunity to meet other kids and participate in exciting, hands-on science projects and computer activities.

HCAP Partnership to Provide Vocational Training Tuition Assistance Opportunity to Samoan Students

Earlier this summer, Le Fetuao: Samoan Language Center reached out to HCAP’s Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program with an interest in helping their students enroll in a vocational training program through the Hawaiʻi Dental Assisting Academy (HDAA). Le Fetuao is a community organization designed to help Samoan youth build positive futures for themselves while staying connected to their cultural heritage.

The Dental Assistant program offered by HDAA runs from August through December, with a flat tuition rate that covers the full cost of textbooks, uniforms, tools, and certification exams. Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services has partnered with nonprofit organizations ALU LIKE, Inc. and the American Job Center to secure full tuition assistance for Le Fetuao students to attend HDAA. 

ALU LIKE, Inc. is able to provide tuition assistance to Native American, Native Alaskan, and Native Hawaiian students, and the American Job Center is also able to assist qualifying students with the cost of tuition. Through this partnership with Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services, tuition for Le Fetuao students attending the HDAA program will be paid in full. Partnering with other organizations to work toward a common goal allows HCAP programs to continue growing and to reach even more members of the community.
