Representative Linda Ichiyama Reads to Head Start Keiki

Recently the Salt Lake Pre-Plus Head Start classroom was treated to a visit by HCAP Board Member and Hawaiʻi Representative Linda Ichiyama. Representative Ichiyama represents Moanalua, Āliamanu and Salt Lake in the 32nd district of Hawaiʻi. She also has been a longstanding HCAP Board Member since October of 2017, and an active member of the HCAP Financial Committee.

Representative Ichiyama volunteered her time to bond with Head Start Keiki by reading them an inspirational and educational story. She chose to read the class the book titled “Tako Lends a Helping Hand”. This story taught important lessons on the importance of teamwork, compromise, and prioritization. Thank you to Linda for dedicating your time to HCAP and to the Head Start Keiki!

Kumuhonua Program Participant Secures Permanent Housing

This week, program participant Wesley moved out of his unit in the Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center and into permanent housing located in Waikiki. He was able to achieve this with the support of Kumuhonua staff, and assistance from the Emergency Housing Voucher program provided by the City and County Section 8 office. The Emergency Housing Voucher program assists Public Housing Authorities in locating long term housing for their participants. Wesley was also assisted during his housing search by the Partners in Care Landlord Engagement Program on application fees, holding fee costs, and obtaining renters insurance.

While participating in the Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center program, Wesley was able to attain General Assistance income, and apply for social security benefits.. He was given further guidance while applying for benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) which provides nutritional support to those in need. Kumuhonua staff are very proud of the strides that Wesley has made in his journey to reach self-sufficiency, and wish him success in his future endeavors.

The Hā Initiative Summer Program Begins

Learning is full-steam ahead for our Hā Initiative Creative STEM After School Program students as the summer STEM Program begins. The summer program kicked off with a community clean up, organized with Mr. Lynde from ʻAiea Elementary. This cleanup took place around the Central District Service Center, Makalapa Park, and neighborhood housing.

Beyond the community clean up, students are also participating in activities related to the topic of the month: music. Students with musical curiosities have begun exploring their talents in the music room, where guest teachers and junior mentors guide students in using instruments and recording technology. These activities are helping students become more well-rounded students as they to expand their knowledge on multiple STEM subjects.
