Central District Clients Work Toward Employment and Reentry
Lemi and Justin are getting a fresh start with employment assistance from HCAP’s Central District Service Center. Lemi had previously received employment services from HCAP in 2020, as a participant in the Oʻahu Community Correctional Center’s Work Furlough Program. Justin heard about HCAP through Lemi, and they decided to reach out to Central District Service Center to enroll in the Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services program.
After completing intake, Lemi and Justin participated in job readiness training. They learned tips for job searching, networking, resume writing, proper work attire, time management, and budgeting. Staff also provided them with hygiene products, so they could achieve clean and polished appearances for job interviews. Lemi and Justin had both been struggling to find transportation for their job searches, so staff arranged to meet them at the Kalihi Transit Center Bus Pass Office and helped them purchase annual bus passes.
In addition to employment services from HCAP, Lemi and Justin are receiving other support services from First LAP, a local non-profit organization. “LAP” stands for “Life After Prison.” First LAP provides housing and counseling to recently paroled individuals, to help them transition back into society. Central District Service Center staff are looking forward to continued collaboration with First LAP, and they hope HCAP’s programs will inspire more participants to work toward employment and successful reentry.

Taste Testing with Maunawili Head Start
The keiki of Maunawili Head Start got to try an orange cucumber that they grew themselves! This was their final Farm to Early Care and Education (ECE) activity for the 2021-2022 school year. From planting, to watering, to removing weeds, their hard work truly paid off when they got to taste test their harvest.
Ava and Loyalty had mixed feelings about the orange cucumber’s taste. They said “it tastes like a cucumber!” and “it’s different.”
HCAP Head Start & Early Head Start applications for the 2022-2023 school year are open now! Click Here for more information and how to apply.
Hā Initiative Students Make Wave Simulations
Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program students at Kaʻiulani Elementary made wave simulations, revisiting their recently completed Ocean & Waves module. The students combined sand, oil, and blue dyed water in empty water bottles. They observed that “waves” are created when the water bottle is held horizontally, because the water and oil do not mix. Students had fun tilting their simulations back and forth to make waves.
