Weatherization Client Recommends HCAP’s Programs & Services
Late last year, Lauralye called HCAP hoping to find a solution to the many issues she was facing with her water heater at home. She had an older tank that sat in the back of their house and showed signs of rust and leakage. Her damaged water heater was raising the cost of her monthly utility bills and her family was inconvenienced by not having enough hot water at times.
Upon learning more about HCAP’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), she was happy to apply with the WAP specialist and found that she qualified for services. During the Home Energy Audit, Lauralye received education on energy-efficient practices that she can apply to her daily routines. Smaller, energy-efficient devices were also installed in her home at no cost, which included LED lightbulbs, low-flow sink aerators for her bathroom and kitchen sink, and a low-flow showerhead. Lauralye was extremely grateful to learn that she would also be receiving a brand-new, solar water heating system at no cost to her family. The good news relieved her of her worries to repair or purchase a new one on her own.
Lauralye was also encouraged to apply for HCAP’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to receive help with payments toward her electric bill. She is in the process of completing her application with staff from the Leeward District Service Center. As a proud recipient of WAP services, Lauralye agreed to participate in WAPBIL monitoring conducted by OCS last week. Lauralye expressed her deep gratitude for HCAP’s services and is happy to have nurtured a good relationship with HCAP staff. She looks forward to recommending WAP to others in her community in hopes that it will help other families in the same way.

Hā Initiative Student Spotlight: Iʻlihia
Iʻlihia, a student at the HCAP Windward Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program has been sketching art ever since she was seven years old when she was inspired by a Disney Channel show, Gravity Falls. With the help of HCAP’s STEM equipment, Iʻlihia recreates her sketches into digital art using “ibispaint(X)”. She then transfers the art onto avery labels and, lastly, laminates and cuts out the drawings. Iʻlihia creates her own custom DIY stickers using these methods. When asked why she likes drawing, Iʻlihia said it allows her to draw what she is feeling.

Making Real-Life Connections with Head Start
Real-life connections assist in keiki’s cognitive development and ability to apply learned concepts to everyday life. These connections help keiki to understand that learned concepts and gained knowledge are tangible and useful outside of the classroom. The keiki from Ewa Pre-Plus Head Start made real-life connections through drawing after reading, Not A Box. Keiki were instructed to use their imagination to create something that was not a box. The keiki employed their fine motor, recall, and color recognition skills to create a variety of items including a monster truck and rocket.
