Windward STEM Students Host a Meaʻai Makeke for Family Day

This month, Windward Hā Initiative students celebrated the completion of their group projects by hosting a vibrant Meaʻai Makeke (Food Market) event. Working in groups of four, students explored street foods from different regions around the world while learning about the cultures and traditions connected to each dish. The event gave students an opportunity to combine research, creativity, and teamwork in a fun and engaging way.

Students showcased a variety of unique foods and drinks from different countries. Some groups introduced the refreshing hwachea summer drink from South Korea, while others shared the colorful and playful fairy bread from Australia. Visitors also enjoyed doughy cinnamon churro treats inspired by Europe and flavorful birria tacos from Mexico. Each group researched the history and cultural significance of their chosen food before presenting it to families and guests.

In preparation for the market, students worked together to decorate their stalls and organize responsibilities for the event. Group members practiced communication and collaboration as they planned displays, prepared information, and managed different street stall duties throughout the evening. The Meaʻai Makeke event was a successful celebration of learning that allowed families to experience students’ hard work, creativity, and global discoveries firsthand.

Kumuhonua Participant One Step Closer to Self-Sufficiency

Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center (KTLC) participant, Sara, started her journey at Kumuhonua in February of 2026 and since then she has been working hard to stay on track of overcoming her barriers. One of the hardships Sara had to overcome was maintaining her sobriety and completing her substance abuse treatment program. She also faces difficulties with her mental health, but has stated that she aims to continuously work with professionals for help.

After Sara successfully completed her treatment program in May, she wasted no time and hit the ground running. She searched everyday for job opportunities and completed employment applications to various positions. There were times Sara wanted to give up, but her Case Manager, Carolyn, gave her encouragement and persistent reminders to never give up no matter what life throws her way. Within a few days following their conversation, Sara was able to successfully obtain employment.

Sara shared that she looks forward to what the future holds for her now that she will be bringing in a steady income. She shows enthusiasm towards working with her case manager in learning to build better budgeting skills and how to better manage her finances. Her goal is to be able to stand on her own two feet and have a place to call her own soon.

Kumuhonua staff are so proud of Sara’s accomplishment thus far and are looking forward to seeing her continue to grow and achieve her goals as she works toward long-term stability and independence.

Head Start Keiki Learn Life Skills: Caring for Clothes

Head Start children experimented with washing, drying and sewing clothes while learning how to properly take care of their own clothing. Teachers helped children practice these real life skills while teaching that there are different ways of completing the same tasks.

Children can be seen focusing on placing the ‘needle’ through the holes to ‘sew’ clothing, while others used water and squeezed items of clothing before placing them to dry. Activities such as these promote life skills while strengthening children’s fine motor skills, coordination and problem solving. They also help children to develop a sense of independence and responsibility, as they learn to take care of and cherish the items that they have.
