Central Client Becomes Job Ready Through Wraparound Services

Kyla was referred to HCAP’s Central District Office by Hawaii Electric Company, Inc. (HECO) to help her and her family regarding the disconnection of their electricity services. During intake, Kyla shared that she has a newborn and is currently living with her Aunt until she can get settled. She explained that she is actively looking for work so she can contribute to her household.

After receiving assistance from the Hawai’i Home Energy Assistance Program (H-HEAP), Central staff were able to prevent the disconnection of her family’s electricity services and shared more information on how they can lower their energy usage to reduce their monthly bills.

Through wraparound services, Central staff were able to refer Kyla to the Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) program. She was able to complete the Job Readiness Training class and received assistance with getting a HOLO Card to alleviate travel expenses on her search for employment.

Kyla also met the age requirement (ages 24 and under) for the Ross Stores, Inc. Store-Based Giving Program which aims to help create brighter futures for today’s youth. Through the ECS program, she was able to receive a $50 Ross gift card to help her with getting professional work attire for her job search.

Central District Service Center will be following Kyla’s journey toward obtaining her goals of being independent.

Head Start & Early Head Start Engages with Community Leaders

Head Start families and staff participated in a Maunakea Resource Fair at Kukui Tower. This vibrant community event offered a special opportunity to meet Hawaii’s Governor and Mayor, along with sharing vital information about HCAP’s Head Start & Early Head Start programs. The event united families, educators, and local leaders to strengthen community connections.

Head Start & Early Head Start featured a variety of materials at the event, highlighting the program’s impact. Books, bucket hats, and informational resources were among the items that were eagerly received and appreciated by attendees. The attendees also learned about the upcoming school year and the benefits of enrolling their keiki.

STEM Students Learn The Importance of Sustainability

At Hā Initiative’s Honolulu STEM Exploration Center, students explored the themes of sustainability and conservation through a fun, hands-on project of creating their very own thrift shops!

To prepare for this event, students brought lightly used clothes and toys from home to trade with their classmates, developed creative shop names, and learned about the value of upcycling. They also designed original thrift shop signs using display boards and art supplies. Each team was also tasked with writing a slogan to promote their stores.

To bring the experience to life on “shop day,” some students took on roles as greeters and sellers, ensuring items were selected and “purchased” with care and purpose. This engaging activity provided students with the opportunity to practice their communication and hospitality skills, and it also helped them understand how small actions, such as reusing clothing and toys can have a meaningful impact on our planet.
