HCAP Head Start & Early Head Start Mobilize for Annual Recruitment Day

On Monday, March 14, HCAP’s Head Start & Early Head Start program mobilized an island-wide recruitment effort in preparation for the 2022-2023 school year. Staff went door-to-door in the local community, visiting residents, businesses, medical offices, educational institutions, and other service providers to distribute program applications and information.

HCAP Head Start & Early Head Start is a quality comprehensive early childhood program for families with limited incomes, providing education, health, nutrition, and family support services. The program is unique in its emphasis on strengthening families through family engagement activities. Head Start provides free and affordable preschool services for children 3 to 5 years old, and Early Head Start provides home-based services to pregnant women and children 0 to 3 years old.

The program is actively recruiting new students for the 2022-2023 school year, which begins in August 2022. Families can learn more about the program and how to apply by calling (808) 847-2400 or online by clicking here.

Windward District Client Secures Employment in Record Time

Natalie first reached out to HCAP’s Windward District Service Center after receiving a disconnection notice from the Board of Water Supply. ‎Natalie was laid off  in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and had exhausted her unemployment benefits by August 2021, leaving her utility bills unpaid for months. Windward District staff immediately enrolled Natalie into the CARES Act-funded Hale Kākou Program to assist with her water bill and bring her payments up to date.

Natalie also worked with Windward staff on a family assessment to discuss barriers and goals. She was eager to get back into the workforce and stay employed, and decided to enroll in HCAP’s Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program. Natalie completed the program’s job readiness training in record time, learning valuable skills for interviewing, budgeting, and building her resume. After less than a week of job searching, Natalie was hired at Ross Dress for Less in Kāneʻohe and has now been employed at the store for over 160 days.

Windward District staff are proud of Natalie’s success and determination and look forward to being a part of the bright future she has ahead as they stay in touch and continue to monitor her progress.

Creativity in Action with HCAP Head Start Kaʻiulani I Keiki

This week at HCAP Head Start‘s Kaʻiulani I classroom, keiki developed their creativity, reasoning, mathematical, and fine motor skills while expanding upon lessons of insects and life skills. In the manipulative center, keiki created a blueprint of tunnels within an ant hill. They also incorporated plastic ants and counted the tunnels they traveled. In the classroom’s grocery store, keiki collected, counted and purchased various food items to prepare a fruit salad and vegetable platter.

HCAP Head Start & Early Head Start applications for the 2022-2023 school year are open now! Click Here for more information and how to enroll your keiki.
