The Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program, a Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center, recently launched its online classroom on Google Classroom. The program is free and provides participants in grades 2 through grades 8 an opportunity to engage in hands-on STEM activities using items they are able to procure around their homes.

This week, Hā Initiative provided students with instructor-led experiment demos. Video tutorials include an experiment on cleaning pennies using lemon juice and a demonstration on how to make a soap-powered model boat. The distance learning program takes place on Google Classroom (classroom.google.com). Please use classroom code garokie to gain access. The hours will be from Monday through Friday, 10am – 2pm. For more information, please call 521-4531 or e-mail hcapstem@hcapweb.org.

Nā Lima Hana Program Participant Receives Tuition Assistance for Vocational Training

Catalina was first introduced to HCAP at the age of three when her mother, recognizing that education was the key to success, signed Catalina up for the Head Start Program. What Catalina’s mother did not expect was the support and structure that Head Start instilled in them both. Head Start inspired Catalina’s mother to further her education. During this time, Catalina’s mom began utilizing the programs that HCAP had to offer and became a volunteer at Central District Service Center.

Catalina is now a high school graduate and young adult. Since graduation, Catalina had a baby girl and has found it very hard to provide the life that she wants for herself and her daughter with only a high school diploma. Catalina remembered how her mom received assistance from HCAP and reached out to Central District Service Center see if there was a program available to help her further her education or vocational skills.

Central District Service Center registered Catalina in the Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program. She participated in job readiness training and received much needed hygiene products and food assistance. Catalina registered for and was accepted in the Nurse’s Aide training course at the Professional Health Care Educators. With ECS funding, HCAP was able to provide some tuition assistance for the training course, as well as scrub uniforms required for class. Catalina is currently attending classes and is looking forward to this opportunity to build and shape her and her daughter’s future.

Kaiulani II Head Start Teacher Shares Proper Hand Washing Techniques

Earlier this month, Reza Galindo, Teacher at Kaiulani II Head Start, shared proper hand washing techniques with parents and guardians at a parent group meeting. Each family received their own handwashing guide to post in their bathrooms at home and learned the hand washing song their children sing in school. The time it takes to sing the song is the amount of time needed to ensure effective hand washing has taken place.
