Na Lima Hana Participants Reach Employment Milestones
Last week, Leahi District Service Center Community Workers distributed gift card incentives for Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program participants who achieved employment milestones. Two of the participants who recently reached 90 days of employment were Tina and Joanne.
Tina enrolled in the ECS Program in October and completed the 13-week pre-employment workshops and training onsite at the Salvation Army in Waialae. Tina was able to obtain a seasonal position as sales associate at Macy’s. The seasonal position has since turned into a full-time job, and Tina couldn’t be happier.
Joanne is also currently employed at Macy’s as a sales associate. She was referred to the ECS Program through the Salvation Army’s Ka ‘Ohu Hou O Manoa Transitional Housing. Joanne is glad to be receiving a steady stream of income, which enables her to pay for rent and help support her family.
Kumuhonua Resident Saves Up and Obtains Permanent Housing
Since 2010, Janell and her boyfriend were part of the hidden homeless population: they were either living on the streets or couch surfing with friends. Through Kealahou West Oahu, Janell was referred to and moved into HCAP’s Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center. The couple eventually separated, and throughout her remaining time at Kumuhonua, Janell started working on herself: attending classes and workshops on saving money and working side-by-side with her Case Manager and Housing Specialist to find permanent housing.
With a physical address, Janell began collecting Social Social Security payments, opened a savings account, and increased her income by recycling cans. Janell’s self-esteem increased tremendously. Janell is now exiting Kumuhonua after securing permanent housing at Waipahu Towers. Janell is very excited to start this new chapter in her life and looks forward to a better and brighter future.

Aiea Head Start Celebrates Dr. Seuss’ Birthday
In celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, the children of Aiea I, II, and Pre-Plus Head Start participated in activities inspired by The Cat in the Hat; they learned about patterns and made their own hat based on the book.
The families also got involved by sharing with the children some Dr. Seuss books from their personal collections. The children loved all of the stories that were shared. The teachers from the Aiea Head Start classrooms also got into the spirit by dressing up as Thing 1 and Thing 2 from The Cat in the Hat.
Leahi District Service Center Staff Attend the Papakōlea ‘Ohana Health Fair
This past Saturday, staff from the Leahi District Service Center attended the annual Papakōlea ‘Ohana Health Fair at Lincoln Elementary School. This year’s theme was Nā Hulu Kahu O Papakōlea, which means “The Esteemed Caregivers of Papakōlea.” Families enjoyed food and entertainment, and learned about health services available to them in their community.
There were vendors from many different organizations and a large number of community members were in attendance. Guests had the chance to learn more about the programs and services HCAP provides. Some visitors even stopped by the HCAP table to express gratitude about how they have benefited from HCAP programs like Head Start.
